Coil Chaos

Morning all.

Well, after a hectic last month, I've finally found (taken) the time to see what was ailing Yummy.

To put you in the picture, I had a coil/plug/lead/cap issue which was intermittent and eventually across all cylinders.

On the trip up to the rally, after a day of light rain, I was running on two cylinders. Pete, Alf, Johno & myself solved it (well mostly Pete, thanks again buddy).

The roadside solution was to snip back the ends of the plug leads. The bike ran ok, not 100%, but still more than good enough to put it down to fix at home and carry on.

On the return trip I began to lose the other coil cylinders (WTF??!!). Ok, same solution to that, snip the leads back & vroom, off I go. Another couple of times, and I finally get home.

Fast forward one month to today, and (after checking with some more knowledgeable people about new coils etc.) I start to pull the bike apart to get to the coils (basically seat & tank off).

On removing the coils, I finally get to the unplugging part and BINGO!!!!  These are not FJ coils and the connectors are pretty bodgy, one wire was loose!

On a trip away with SWMBO earlier in the year I made a mad dash into a wreckers and managed to scrounge all the FJ coils they had (ended up with a couple that aren't FJ, but would work). I did a quick rummage through these sets of coils and found ones with the correct connectors.

I'm about to fit them off & flash Yummy up.

I'm guessing that you are having enough fun already, but I saw an FJ conversion to coil-over-plug here, with only low-voltage DC going to the spark plug locations.  They were R1 coils, 2009~2011 vintage, and Ebay seems like the best source for them in the USA, on-line.  The OP got the spark plugs' wiring harness from the R1 also, making it a plug-and-play project.  It was a super-clean mod, when finished.  I plan to make the change at the first excuse, here.

Thanks Red, I think I'm going to feel a little moditis coming up.

A great result! No money spent, fix done with all shops shut. Yummy purring like a big kitten.

This win motivated me to fix  other bits, side stand spring, yeah spare in my dirty bits box. A couple of other niggly things. Feeling good.

Then, with win after win, I tackle Effie. Fix the broken instrument mount. Replace blown bulbs (quite a few), then a general going over.

A quick wash and both girls are now sleeping. I can tell their dreaming, ready!
