Clutch push rod seal

I just replaced my clutch slave cylinder and noticed that I didn't have the push rod seal on the rod. I have a spare one and I'm not sure what way round it goes. Does the flat side face towards the slave or the other way around. The arrow on the picture if that helps

Hey Scottie, the scooped side will face into the clutch. Once its seated, you should see only the flat side.

Every oil seal faces the oil pressure with the open side.

I'm today replacing the clutch slave seals which is no problem but how do I extract the old rod seal. It deep in the left case. It's not leaking ATM but prevention etc. My Haynes manual doesn't cover it.

Hi Krusty

There are no clips or anything to hold it in. Remove the rod and use a dentist pick to pull the old seal out. Then you simply push the new one into place.
Little word to the wise. Do NOT start the bike with the slave cylinder removed. The rod will shoot out and spear your cat (or dog) and oil will pump out everywhere and the little ball on the cluch end of the rod is gone forever.....ask me how I know.

Thanks UL. Seems like I've suffered a massive dose of old timers. Should have thought to take the #@$&%$ sprocket cover off. Doh. Must be the heat cos I'm working on the bike out in the sun (short on space in the garage) and it's well over 30c out there.

Yeh, poor buggers. Power outages too. A NE sea breeze has sprung up here so I'm going windsurfing and will finish the bike off this evening.

I've been here watching in Melbourne tennis for last couple of days, today was hot but around 2pm dropped 12 degrees in 10 mins and still dropping with the southly blowing but Australia day is going to be great temps, much better than NSW boys.
No power outages but after tennis last night, 32℃ midnight , lifts were out in the building we are staying in and we had to use fire stairs to get to level 27.

A bit of practice is never bad.

Clutch slave cylinder o'haul completed including repainting the cylinder housing and sprocket cover that had been affected by clutch fluid. All nice and pretty. Took about 5 minutes to bleed the system, after cleaning out the M/C. Used the traditional method, never fails.
I used caliper paint. Dries very quick. Is good for exhaust pipes too.

Replaced the push rod seal too. Easy-peasy. It's 2200 here and temp is 28c and doesn't look like going downmuch more tonight. Very humid. Still, better off than those in the southern states. They reckon it'll be our turn to suffer on Sunday.

Good work. Looks schmick. I was going to do stuff in the shed tonight, but changed that to a glass of red on the back veranda  and enjoying a cool 26c. 36c forecast for the next two days for northern new.

I've found a cheap push rod seal for 4.50...no post charge.
Is that what tends to leak?
Or should I buy the whole caboodle, all replacement seals plus spring?.
Just a thought.
