Brake pad material an RPM new product potential?

Peeps,
Just read an article on EBC semi sintered pads and how they lodge between their organic and sintered range.
Any riders used these?
I like the EBC organics and am hugely paranoid against rotor eating full sintered jobs.
EBC say their semi- sintered provides a bit more initial bite without loosing lever feel or roughing up the rotors.
If enough interest or glowing reports, perhaps these maybe a welcome addition to the RPM list of ever growing goodies.

I think there's a bit of urban myth at play here.

I read on a UK FJR forum that EBC HH pads were the work of the devil, a view universally accepted by the membership it appears. Seems everyone "knew" someone who's discs had been destroyed in 10,000km or less using them. I could not find a single example of anyone experiencing it first hand but this did not stop it becoming a "fact".

Exact same scenario on another forum about Chinese rotors.

EBC HH are probably the most widely use pads here and I have never heard any mention of it on the forum, although aware of it as a commonly held belief "out there"

I have used them since getting my bike 130k ago (about half on original rotors and half on Chinese rotors). I'm very hard on my brakes and have made no such observation nor have any of the riders I know who use them.

I have a friend who runs a single brand service centre with 3500 customers on his books, While he's a stickler for using genuine replacement everything, these pads are the one exception, the improvement being so dramatic over OEM pads. He keeps the customers pad choice on record so he doesn't have to ring if the need to replace them arises while servicing. Most of them run these pads and love them. He has not observed any increase in rotor wear, even long term. That's a mighty big sample base.

The GS has only had one set of rotors in 200k and has run EBC HH pads since the first change. The rotors are perfect and within spec and also get a flogging.

Hope this allays some of your paranoia  :biggrin:

Yep, I agree, HH pads are good. I've never had a problem.

When changing pad compounds, meaning changing over from organic to sintered pads, or vice versa, you need to scrub the old pad's transfer layer off your rotors. Clean rotors are needed for a new transfer layer.

I have done a little research this morning. They do offer the V-Series, semi sintered pad in the stock FA88 caliper pad (84-88 Frt and all rear calipers). EBC does not offer them in the FA123 or FA252 for the stock 89+ calipers or the blue spots.

I also have to agree with others about wear usung the HH sintered pads. The misconception of the excessive wear seems to be a thing of interweb folklore. I too have been using them on the front of my bikes without any rotor replacement required.

Back to the V-series pads. I will probably put a set in stock as well as a set on  my bike. I personally do not like the HH pads on the rear as they are too aggressive. I do get some fade on the organic pad on the rear, so maybe the V-series is the in between we need.

Well don't you just learn something new everyday. After the weigh-in I think I'll order the HH specials; collective Fj wisdom deems them good. Never heard of the transfer coating before, so that's something to impress the chicks down the pub.
