G'day everyone, fitted a set of Metzeler Roadtec 01 tyres to the 1100 a couple of days ago. After a scrub in ride yesterday morning, I took them for a test ride down one of our local scenic roads (test track). These tyres are way better than anything that I have ridden on ever! Over the past four or five years I have tried most of the latest and greatest tyres suitable for our FJ's but these 01's are in another league. The Metzler Z8's are a great tyre but these 01's are on another level again. On a scale of 1-10, I rate Michelin Pilot Road 4's about a 7.5-8/10,  Metzeler Z8's 9/10 and the 01's 10/10. If they live up to all the hype about wet weather performance and milage, they certainly should be considered a brilliant tyre. I have no affiliation with Metzeler or any tyre outlet (unfortunately) so this is a completely unbiased opinion. Highly recommended!
   Regards, Pete.

Please, please keep us informed of your impressions of this tire. On my ride to the East Coast back in August, I wore out the rear tire and needed a new set to get back home. My #1 choice was the Metzeler RoadTec 01's. Unfortunately no retailer had any in stock and I did not have the time to wait for an order to arrive. I settled for a set of Conti-Motions, which are what I have been using for a couple of years now.

Pete,
Thanks for the comparison of the Roadtec 01 and the Z8. I was leaning pretty heavily towards the Z8, but now I am giving the 01another look. This motojournalist was very impressed as well:http://www.cycleworld.com/metzeler-roadtec-01-motorcycle-tire-review-first-ride#page-5

Joe, in my opinion you won't go wrong with either of those tyres. I would have been more than happy to fit another set of the Z8's but I have a tendency to try out new model tyres when my worn set are due for replacement.  Over the past 5 years I have tried out at least 7 different sets of top shelf tyres, the only one that I have re-used were the Z8's because I was so impressed with them. Possibly the only draw back with the 01's compared to the Z8's is the price, 01's seem to be more expensive than the Z8's probably due to the newness of the 01's and the old stock capacity of the Z8's.
Fred, it's a shame the dealer didn't have the 01's in stock because you would have loved them. All you have to do is look at a corner and the next thing you know is that you're looking for the next one. Absolutely no sideways movement from front or rear no matter how hard I pushed it. Very smooth, quiet ride and the braking is phenomenal. Did a small brake test from 160kmh down to the town limit of 50kmh, only word to describe it, BRILLIANT.
Do yourself a favour and hurry up and wear those Conti's out.

Damn you Pete, I had just resigned myself to the fact I won't wear out the P4's before Bermagui, but know you've done it. New tyres, rego and a trip, all in one week - ouch!  I can't wait to try them out though.
The previous Z8's were way better than the P4's I have at the moment and even if Metzeler had not released a new tyre, I would have gone back to them.

One good thing about the P4's, they're bloody hard to wear out. I must have 10 or 12K on them by now.

Pete, did you get the GT's (HWM) version or the standard?

Noel, I've fitted the standard variety. I have used the GT's in other tyre choices but found no benefit from using them. I am fairly light at around 80kgs, usually don't carry much weight when touring and rarely have a pillion so I see no need for the heavier sidewall structure of the GT's. I know the FJ is of the heavier variety when it comes to bike weights but mine is one of the skinnier models being an '85, unlike the later fatter less sporty 1200's.

Thanks Pete, I hadn't considered the different needs of my bloated land yatch. I'll see what's available in truck tyres.
