Hi guys

New to having a older fj...
Question....

Either the previous owner has messed with the wiring or this is a first for me,
But my starter is always live. Regardless if the key is in or not.

The gauge cluster and lights go off when the key is out, but the starter switch will turn the bike over .
Also the bike won't start if the kick stand is down, it will turn over but not start or run at all if I put the kick stand down, regardless if it is in neutral or not.

Thought it should run with the stand down and in neutral?

Is this all normal for the Fj?  I can't imagine it is...

Thanks
Scott.

No, it's not normal, and unfortuneately you imagined right. It appears you have a bit of a mess to sort out.

Yup....

Well that's ok . It's being overhauled anyway. My winter project . It seemed messed up to me ...so guess I'll add it to the list

Thanks

This issue has come up before: starter turned on by itself and doesnt quit

In both of the cases I'm aware of (I've had the same issue), the insulation on one of the "Hot" wires to the starter wore off, and allowed the starter circuit to ground out.  In my case, the main wiring harness had rubbed up against my right fork tube, and the outer wrapping tape had worn through.  Eventually, two of the inner wires' insulation also wore through, and whenever the bare copper wires touched the fork tube, they completed the starter circuit.

I would advise looking closely at your wiring harness to see if there is any of the insulation material is worn.
