Shame we can't acknowledge the heros that helped start the whole community 12 years ago on yahoo and push it to over 130K+ posts before Marsh took us into the 21st century.

My hat's off to all the guys that gave me crucial info and had unending patience.  :hi:

Chris,
I am glad someone stepped up many years ago and provided an avenue of information at the Yahoo group. I joined the Yahoo group back in '00. The feeling I got then and I still see written today is that I am one of those "Legends" guys. This from the Yahoo group posted yesterday, "I figure that those darn Legends guys..." Unfortunately there are people who have taken that fine forum and turned it into the purist FJ site. Not only are the "Legends" guys frowned upon, the modifications that seem to be so prevalent here are also frowned upon.

This site has taken us to the 21st century with its ease of use and I feel perfectly comfortable posting here without someone questioning my suggestions, recommendations or answers. While I understand some people do have the "book" smarts, but it is us "Legends" guys that have the experience with these FJ powerplants and taken the FJ to a level never dreamed by Yamaha. With that being said, I am no Hank Scott, who has built over 7000 engines in his career, but I have just completed last night #141 & 142 complete rebuilds. I have three sets of carbs that I am going through today and I have lost count of the engines that I have repaired since I touched my first FJ1200 back in 1994.

I am proud to be a owner of two FJ's. It is a bike that my wife & I can ride, I can work on and maintain. The benefit to the group, is my experience and a source of parts to keep the FJ upright and carving the twisties.

Randy, I think where the racers got the bad rap was early on was when the "racers" would buy a FJ run the engine until it blew and then buy another one and do it again. To others like you that perfer the XJR engines and use them to up the state of the art in the FJs a BIG :good2: :good2:

Thanks
Kim

YES!!!

Thank you Marsh for providing the off-topic places for the BS to reside!  The Yahoo group in infinitely more enjoyable now that a majority of the off-topic crap is gone.

Randy, I don't sense any hostility towards you over there.  I was a BIG critic of Legends, but that's because I was exposed to a lot of racer wannabes for the brief period that I was involved in the sport.   You have been, and continue to be, a valuable member of the community.  Anyone who says otherwise is grossly uninformed.

However, I will always be disappointed at anyone who trolls any of our sites for the sole purpose of hoping to snag an FJ motor cheap.

This site is more enjoyable to use, but as David says above, the Yahoo list is now much better since the BS has a place of its own here.
Many of the long time participants on the Yahoo list are now on this site and still involved on the FJ Yahoo list.  Shame about how clunky the Yahoo experience itself is.

Randy, yes there are some FJ owners that are down on the Legends guys, but my opiinion is that it is because of them that parts are still being produced for these engines.  You are certainly an asset to us FJ owners.

I'm involved on 3 FJ lists - this one, the Yahoo list, and the micapeak list.  Many here are also on all 3.  This is the list with the greatest amount of traffic, and is also the easiest navigate to a particular topic.  I don't see any need to rubbish the other lists, there are characters on each list that choose to not participate on the others, and they too can have valuable comments.

Cheers,
Arnie

Randy - don't sell yourself short - most of those 7,000 engines are as Hank describes in his own words "punch press" - all built to a "standard" set of specs.  As you explained to me, all the engines you do are individual builds -- big difference in my book!  Both quality work, but the individual build takes a lot more time, fitting, and patience.

Arnie,

So, How is Mazz?  I still recall, with a chuckle, the time he was droning on about some topic (it may have been his skepticism of the 17" front wheel upgrade).  After a multitude of loooong rambling posts from Mazz you mentioned, somewhat offhandly, that you didn't read all of his posts.

He was crushed!   I kind of miss not reading all of Mazz' posts, but then, I have an 8 year old that argues about ANYthing and EVERYthing so I don't really need another one.  :-)

I think it was a discussion about bearings and side loadings on a race, in which after ... nevermind.  Yeah, he does sometimes get enamoured of the sound of his own voice, but he has also shown his willingness to keep the list going and become the "moderator" of record, even with only a dial-up connection.  There is not much traffic on that list anymore which is kind of a shame.  AFAIK it is/was the earliest FJ dedicated list and some there are not plugged into either this or the Yahoo list.  To answer your question, he seems fine, is less frequently given to long rambling essays about various topics, but still retains his 'right' to have the last word.

Cheers,
Arnie
