Another Day With The FJ1200

Installed a set of cbr mirrors and some passenger foot pegs.
Decided to go for a ride, rode into the cascade mountains there was a storm up there
so I rode back only a 100+ mile ride but had a lot of fun. I'm wonting to  put a GPS
under the windshield some where to be a little bit out of the weather! any one have any Ideals
how to do it let me know.

A GPS has 2 possible locations, below, or as you mention, above your instruments.
There is not much room above nor suitable mounting points. I have seen them mounted there and they just don't look right, mostly I guess because they don't fit and they are too high.

In my experience a GPS is something you refer to occasionally, not something you watch constantly and I could think of nothing worse that having it right in my line of sight.

The most common mounting position is below, using a variety of mounting options so that when seated on the bike it is viewed just below the instruments.




If protection from the weather is your concern, there is an endless variety of cases for just that purpose, soft and hard, on eBay and they are cheap.



I've done over 100,000 kms with GPS on the bike and could no longer imagine travelling without it. I have discovered roads and explored parts of the country that I would never have found without it.

Noel.. What a clear Wind Shield you have,,
How did you keep your Wind Shield  so clear ?? ,
Or  is it a Brand new one,,
Mine is a bit cloudy and a bit hard to see through.
Any secrets to getting it a bit clearer .

I epoxied a nut inside the cap of the black steering stem nut and bolted a ram mount to it. Works great.

No, it's 150,000km / 23 yo.

I couldn't even see through this when I got it. I thought it has some sort of coating on it that was fading.



Briefly, you can't restore/polish plastic by hand, it has to be machine polished. Start with various grades of W&D, then machine buff with metal polish (or automotive cutting compound) just so long as there is no silicone or polish in it, metal polish is best.

What grades of paper and polishes, what and when to step up to the next grade, what type of buff (different density foams/lambs wool) how fast, how much pressure, how much heat you generate (you need heat) is a bit of a black art.

TIP: When it's new or restored, lightly hand polish it every time you wash it, washing scratches it.  If you wait until it looks scratched, it's already become a big job.

I bought these lights cheap because of the terrible condition they were in, this one's half done.

I like doing this sort of stuff, very satisfying.
