Howdy folks
Once again the bottom bolt  on my alternator 1100 has broken off inside. Trouble is the last time I fixed it I used thread locker and now the broken bit wont come out.

Was wondering if anyone has a really awesome trick to extract the broken bit.
    Thanks Lez

Hi Lez

You can warm up the bolt where the threadlock is applied..
That normally helps to get the threadlock to loose its grip on the threat

Hope it works

Heat it up as Hannes suggested.  Then center punch it and use a set of left turn drill bits on it.  Start with a small drill bit, go slow and easy -- DO NOT BREAK ONE OFF!  And work up through the drill bit sizes until it finally comes out.  Usually one of the drill bits will "bite" the edge and spin it out.

Good luck!

Just a tip, A soldering gun works very well for heating small bolts. It takes patience but the localized heat is less likely to damage the surroundings than other means of applying heat.

OK THANKS will launch an attack on it this weekend.

Good luck!

The set of left turn drill bits I have came in a set of screw extractors.  If you get a set like this - throw away the screw extractors!!!!  They WILL break off in a well stuck bolt, and then your remaining choices are a LOT more drastic and difficult!

I heated the crap out of it until I swear the aluminum almost slumped, So got a bit for an 8mm tap and attached it to one of those extenda bit holders with the two set screws on the end and drilled the hole.
Removed the handle from a tap holder and welded a 14 mm socket to it with a 3/8 drive put 8mm tap in holder and used extension in 14mm socket and re-tapped the hole  ...altrenator back on.
