The fastest way to immigrate to Canada is if you have a trade.  They will bump you to the head of the line.  Plumbing/Electrical/Construction doesn't matter.  Since the '70's the educational system has funnelled kids into post secondary degrees because clean fingernails are a sign of status.  Much like some cultures that put those big wooden discs in their lower lip, or those rings to stretch their necks.

I got sucked into that trap 35 yrs ago (Is it that long ago...?), and kick myself now for it.  Should have taken the other path.  I'm sure it's similar in other places where we have tens of thousands of kids graduating with degrees working stocking shelves or pouring your coffee.  There are no jobs out there, yet are still pushing them through the meat grinder like bland bread filled breakfast sausages. (Say that fives times fast!)

The company I work for won't even do apprenticeships for electricians or maintanance mechanics, even though there is a sorry need for them.  Hence the open door policy for foreign trade workers by immigration.  The government and industry would rather import than invest in their own.  Whether you need a shovel, a pair of jeans, or a tool and die mechanic, it's cheaper that way.
