Will late model (91+) head pipes work with an early (84) collector box?  Would it us the late exhaust gaskets?  First time to try and work with stock exhaust parts!  :pardon:

Pat Conlon

Yes, I have the late model ss head pipes on my '84 collector box. I re-used my '84 collector gaskets.
The difference between the early vs late model gaskets is that the early is metallic brass and the late are a softer fiber.

Remember that the pipes are numbered 1-4 so they go on the correct inlets on the collector.

Cheers laddie!

Dredging this one back up...

Can 2 & 3 be interchanged?  Also 1 & 4?

I'd like to get wideband O2 readings from each cylinder to see how they compare - just wondering if I can bung one inner and one outer head pipe and then swap them around to compare?  Or if I would need to bung all four head pipes?

Thanks!

Each of the head pipes have a different part number. I am going to take a WAG that it may be due to the slight differences in the directional bends of each pipe.

I looked hear for the reference. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1991/FJ1200B/EXHAUST/parts.html

I am thinking you may need to bung each pipe.

Looking at my '86 headers and collector on the bench, it seems like you could swap the inner and outer header pipes. On my '86 they already have ports near the collector. Since they are located at different angles the pipes would need different part numbers.

Fred - I saw that too - I was hoping it had to do with something that didn't effect the fitment possibly -- like the ports Marc mentions.  I wish there was a readily available O2 sensor that would fit those ports!
