Back in Black

It was finally time to do something about those ugly header pipes. I had the exhaust system powder-coated a few years back but the Yukon and Alaska gravel roads took their toll. Here's a pic from last season showing the top of a couple pipes - and yes, they looked like that pretty much right to the 4-1 collector area.


I picked up a can of Beauti-Tone high heat (BBQ) paint in "Hibatchi Black" at the local Home Hardware. Of course I made sure to take the exhaust system off, clean it up with a pressure washer and a scrub-down to make sure it was free of dirt and debris and then put a good 3 coats of paint on it.


Here's what it looks like installed and after a few heat-cycles (1 minute at a time) to get the paint to bake on. I must say it looks pretty good!

On the subject of headers, when replacing the exhaust gaskets is bearing grease the accepted way to hold the new gaskets in place?

I squeeze mine with a pair of pliers just enough to make them slightly out of round.  They stay in the recess this way--then the headers can be fitted.

Sounds like a good solution, it won't take much bend to hold them.

That is exactly what you do. Don't over do it though, they only need a whisker and they won't budge

Let's know how it looks after 6 mths of use Zwartie, damned if I could ever find anything that lasts.

I gave up in the end and polished them, not that I was looking for something else to keep clean, but I got sick of the paint breaking down. I have a shelf full of various high temp and purpose made exhaust paints.
