Fuel reserve

So, previously, I had reserve kick in before the fuel warning light lit. The switch didn't seem to be doing much of anything.

Today, I got the "out of gas performance" on the highway, with about 3/4 tank. Got to a gas station, unplugged the petcock connector, and ot back to normal operation.

I think this is a pretty good indication of the reserve system crapping out.

Is there any hidden dangers with running with the petcock unplugged? The whole reserve system seems kind of goofy and redundant, especially given fuel gauge and warning light.

More explanation is needed. What do you mean by "unplugged the petcock connector"? The electrical lead going to the petcock or the vacuum hose?

[edit] Now that I've had my nap, you must mean the electrical connector.
Now I recall that the 86/87 petcocks have no lever setting for 'prime' (P) like the 84/85 petcocks, therefore you can not mean that you unplugged the vacuum line (the petcock would not open) ergo, you unplugged the electrical lead.

To answer your question: No, there should be no problem running your bike like this...Your vacuum line (still connected) will still open and shut the petcock.
It's running your bike with the vacuum line disconnected and petcock set to prime (84/85 petcocks) where things will go horribly wrong.

All of my previous bikes did not have a fuel level gauge. And the FJ fuel gauge has not been all that accurate (helpful). Oil temp would only be slightly more helpful so I know when I can jam on the the full Kookaklooo with less ring damage.  I use the trip meter/odo and plan my fuel stops accordingly. Many of us plan fuel stops based on our ass and its comfort level. Stop, drink some water/liquids, check in on the FJowners posts, then move on to the next fill up... Don't forgrt to post up your rides...
