Voltage Regulator

This probably doesn't belong here, but hopefully it will be seen by more people than the Vendor section. 

Recently my FZ1 voltage rectifier/regulator started putting out less voltage than necessary to keep the battery charged.  I searched on-line to find a replacement and the only one that showed up was on Ail Baba (the Chinese eBay) from someone named Tong Jun Mang in freaking China.  So contrary to my normal logic, I ordered one, it was only $30.

Well, guess what?  The wiring harness was about 8 inches too short.  So I built an adaptor for the harness and got it plugged in.  Its output was only a weak dick 13 volts, not nearly enough to keep the battery charged.  Also after 4 minutes of running, it was too hot to touch.  I started a dispute with the manufacturer and have gotten nothing but rude responses from him.  I finally told him to keep my money and I would alert EVERY motorcycle forum that I could that his parts are a piece of SHIT.

Mission accomplished.

Here is where I got my regulator.  Scroll down and look at the IB303 or 305. One is fixed and one is adjustable.

Does that use the large, finned external regulator/rectifier similar to the R-1?

What year FZ1 exactly?

Pat, when I looked a few weeks ago it was listed as obsolete with no alternate.  In somewhat of a panic I did a search and found a very nice write up of a replacement that is larger than the OEM and is supposed to be a better MOSFET based unit.  I ordered the parts and have that one tie-wrapped to the passenger footpeg with temporary wires going to it.  It's working fine, but it is significantly larger than the original so I was going to try to fab a bracket to mount it under the fairing.  

So, 2 weeks later the new unit is still working well but I'm not having any luck trying to get it mounted.  Another internet search shows an OEM replacement from the Ali Baba site.  And it's only $30!  Initially I thought this was good news (yeah, right!) as a call to the local dealer wanted $180.  Worth a shot.  But this thing is total shit and the guy says I ordered the wrong thing.  Now I'm just stringing the conversation along to see how mad I can get him and to see if I can get him to admit that he screwed up.  Also I'm enjoying reading his "Engrish."  Now that the conversation has degraded to name calling, he's getting funnier with his cursing.

Bottomline is Boats.net is now listing a replacement for $117 so I've got one of those on order.  Crap. I forgot all about Randy.  Sorry Randy!

George, this thing is totally different than what to FJ uses.  It's a combination regulator/rectifier.  Rather than using an alternator it uses a rotor and stator which generates a 3-phase AC signal to the R/R.  It's about 3 in x 4 in.

If the original R/R was a shunt design, you are better off adapting a newer Mosfet design.

I did the same on a '98 VFR and used a R1 R/R (I think).  It was quite a bit larger than the OEM but managed to find a place to put it.  The Mosfet one will run much, much cooler.  As long as you can get a little air around it you should be ok.

This guy carries all the OE connectors for a nice clean upgrade.  Looking at his site, I think I used the R1 FH012.  One key is to have a very solid ground out of the R/R.

Yes this is a variation of the R1 R/R and I got the connector harnesses from Eastern Beaver.  I'm going to try to make the larger unit work eventually.  Unfortunately it's a $40 cheap Chinese copy that may not last too long.  It's charging, but struggles to get over 14 volts.  The original R/R was struggling to make 13 volts.

If I can make a bracket to hold the MOSFET unit I'll make the switch permanently.  Right now it's getting plenty of air, but if it rains it will also get plenty of water.  Since this is my primary work commuter bike, I need it to work reliably.

Having decided to go to a li-ion type battery for weight savings I was also looking for a suitable voltage regulator. Searching the files there is an excellent write up on the Bosch RE55. It has a reasonable price on ebay of $40. The write up shows it mounted externally similar to Georges installation in the pictures. It is nonadjustable but is rated at 14.2 volts output. The only problem I see from the pictures is it has MADE IN AUSTRALIA on the bottom. Don't know if the flippin thing would work in the northern hemisphere as the electrons spin backwards down under.   :sarcastic:   Thought I might give it a try.  Dave

Your a funny Bugga TexasDave  :biggrin:....... Here is my Aussie install of the RE55. I installed it directly to the holy shit handles underneath no problems. The only drama was standing on my head while doing it ( so the electrons were running the right way ). Apparently if you cut the wire sticking through the voltage will increase ?????
