So, I'm trying to replace the fork seals on a 92 and I'm a bit stuck.
I'm following the Clymer manual and trying to remove the Allen bolt at the base of the slider but the bolt simply spins.  At this point I have the assembly in a vise holding the slider and I'm scratching my head.  Any ideas? The slider isnt turning (its in the vise) and the tube turns if i dont hold onto it.  The bolt just keeps spinning around and i can hear 'movement' inside the tube.  Per the manual instructions I have already loosened the fork cap.  Is it going to do anything to retighten that bugger?  I was assuming the bolt screwed into the slider itself but maybe thats not the case.

With the fork cap and springs (and oil) removed you will need to have an additional tool that reaches down into the top of the damper unit to keep it from spinning. The index screw is clearly FUBAR at this point. Since you have the forks this far apart, consider upgrading to the RPM valves. They perform awesome in my opinion.

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

What FJ Monkey said about installing some RPM emulators is very well worth considering if you can swing the $$.  You'll never regret it...and you do have your forks apart....

You can either buy/make a tool to hold it or could try a wooden broom handle shoved in the end. Worked for me a couple times, and made easier if you use a rattle gun on the Allen bolt as it may have locktite on it.
