LED turn signal issue

Hi,
I was changing my rear turn signals to LED with load resisters. I did the right rear side and all went well. The flashing was the right speed. I tried the left hand side and the flashing was fast with the load resister. I reconnected the wires and it was still going fast then it stopped all together. I took off the load resister and tried again and now all I get when I use the flasher button is one click sound like it is going to start flashing but nothing happens. The front and rear side don't work now and the flasher signal on the dash does not blink either. Like I said before, the right side both front and rear work great but not the left side, nothing happens. Is there a relay for each side on the 1993 model (No ABS). I checked the fuse and it was OK. If I pulled on something for the rear then the rear only should not work but it has to be something for both the front and rear on that side.

Thanks,
Mark

I only have an 84 and 85 wiring diagram. The front, rear and indicator lights are wired in parallel. The LED lights can be polarity sensitive and the power and ground if reversed wont light the LED. The flasher relay is controlled by the current consumed by the lights, that's why the resistor pack is needed. Are the turn signals connected with single pin bullet connectors? Check the colors again for reversed polarity. Next try connecting each light individually to the battery to see if they come on. Remove the power wire from the  bikes wiring harness first.  I don't understand completely the diagram for the turn signal switch but I believe that the left and right signal lights share the same relay circuit.

Hi,
the signal was flashing fast to start with. It had the load resister on. It might not have been connected well. I re-checked it then I tried another resistor just in case and then it just stopped flashing. Both the front and rear stopped. The bulb is good, I tested it with a 9 volt battery. The front bulb is good as well. I checked the polarity and switched the plugs going to the signal and it still didn't work. This can't be something only related to the rear because the front doesn't work either. if it were just the rear, the front would flash fast to show there is a problem. When turning the switch I hear one click and the neutral light dims slightly very quickly then goes back to normal. There are two relays on the 93. The main which the signals are connected to and all the safety connections as well and then there's the signal only relay. The signal only relay is working because the other side is working. I figure it can be narrowed down to the switch or the main relay. I was playing with the switch when testing, maybe it went bad for that side. I think I will open the switch and possible try to bypass it for the left hand side to verify. If it works then there's the problem. If not then it must be the main relay. At least that is what I think logically.

Try the original lamps. That will tell whether the switch has gone bad. The switch must have several springs inside.

Hi,
I had tried with the regular bulb and the same thing happened. I don't think it's related directly to the rear bulb because in this case the front bulb should still be flashing but it's not. Usually when you turn on the signals you get the faint clicking noise when flashing. For this side it clicks once then stops and the indicator light on the dash does not come on. That to me points to the switch. I am going to jump the wires and try it. If it works then it's definitely the switch. By the way is there a write up to clean the switch? I don't want to open it up and have the springs pop out.

Thanks,
Mark

So as I was doing my testing and I noticed that the rear connectors were touching. One of the metal posts was bent. I bent it back to the proper position and everything was working. I added the load resisters and now all my lights are LED including the headlight.

Thanks for the help,
Mark

That's great. :good2: Which led turn signals did you use and are you pleased with how they look?

I got the LEDs and the load resistors on Ebay. The rears are great, nice and bright. The fronts are good but I though there would be a bigger difference between running light and flasher. My LED brake lights are real nice. I will have to check out some other bulbs. I just came back from a test drive and now the dash lights are flickering. I think maybe I pulled a wire a little or pinched one. Well, I'll have to open her up again to recheck.

Good to hear that you got the wiring straightened out. When I converted over to LED signals, I also did not like the front signal brightness. I solved it by getting some high wattage CREE LED bulbs. They cured the problem and I have had no issues with wiring and the added power draw.

This will give you an idea what to expect with the CREE bulbs. I have clear lenses and the HID headlight and as you can see, the signals are still bright and easy to see.

I used the amber colored bulbs. I did some research and I thought that using the same color of the lens brings out more light but apparently it doesn't do much. I have a Cree headlight bulb and it's great.

Forget about those crappy load resistors and fix the fast flash the right way by replacing the stock flasher with an electronic one. I soldered this one in place of the OE one on my 91 and it works absolutely flawlessly. Plus with only 3 wires it's a lot easier to install than having to do a load resistor for each bulb you replace with an LED.

Hi,
that's a great idea but I already wired in the load resisters to all 4 corners and they are nicely tie wrapped in. I do have a problem when I turn on the signal on one side, the other side in the front blinks faintly as well at the same time.
