I found these forks: http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-FJ-1200-1988-1989-1990-3CV-FORKS-DAMAGED-USED-MOTORCYCLE-PARTS-/191405052672
Can I just replace the rusty tubes using tubes from my FJ1100?

Yes, you can. All you really need are the lower sliders, new bushings and seals, you might as well put in the correct rate springs and RPM valves while you are in there. The blue dots will bolt right on.

Yes the early tubes will swap to the later sliders.  But I am pretty sure you will need to swap to the later rims and brakes at the same time -- pretty sure the spacing on the early brake discs is different than the late models and the calipers will not line up.

I really believe you need to narrow down and determine which direction you wish to go and start your search.....Back and foward on ideas will make this harder....figure out how much you can do and pick a route that will suite your budget and skills..Blue dots are on with masters which i run on ebay all the time...i have a Stock 17" rim with rotors for sale which i ran till i found a FZR rim....There is one member i just sold 89 forks to who wrecked his bike before mounting and is reselling them...Once you settle in on a direction it will piece together from there...I got RPM Valves and Race Tech Springs in my front with R6 2003 Master and brakes Love Them!!!!

I own a V-rod and this is my first ever Yamaha. I love the bike and I want to make it shine again.
This is my very first project of that scale. And to be honest I'm not quite sure yet which direction to take. That's why I ask so many questions. And I realise many of them may seem silly to experienced guys like you.
I want this project to be done right - no shortcuts and no compromises. The goal is a safe and reliable bike which will also be easy on the eye. In fact this is a cafe racer mod.
I got the bike cheap and I have some budget left to buy new forks, calipers, rims etc.
I have already located new forks in Germany but hey, if I get a better offer then why not.
