Swapped my R1 mirrors for CBR250R mirrors

While the R1 mirrors that I installed quite some time ago were better than the OEM flag-mirrors that came on the FJ, they still weren't far enough out to provide a clear view behind me.
They were still halfway taken up by my shoulders at any given time, unless I shifted myself to see behind me.

About a year ago, while giving the bike a good cleaning, I ruined one of them.
I was using compressed air to blow the water off the FJ after rinse. While blowing off the right side mirror, I must've blown some water inside the edge of the mirror glass, and it fogged up the finish on the inside of the glass.
I've been just living with it ever since.

I finally decided to do something about it.

I scored this used set of CBR250R mirrors off Ebay for $40-shipped.

Here's my FJ with the R1 mirrors on it.

Here's how much longer the stalks are on the CBR250 mirrors, compared to the R1 mirrors.

The bases required a little modification with the Dremel.

Then a little black paint. (I used some Krylon Fusion that I had in the cabinet.)

Picked up some new screws at ACE Hardware right down the street.

Bases mounted.

Mirrors attached!  :good:

Initial observation from sitting on it, and adjusting them properly: I can see completely behind me while just getting a glimpse of my shoulder on the edge of the mirrors. (I've got wide shoulders)
Also, the glass in both of them is completely clear. I'll try my best not to ruin these.  :drinks:

Very nice Alan! What year(s) CBR250R do those mirrors come from?

The Ebay listing that I purchased said they were 2013 model year, but there are probably a few model years that they fit (2011-2015 maybe?)

There are quite a few of them listed on Ebay right now.
The set that I bought, one of them has some scuffs on it, but it doesn't bother me. My bike's not perfect. :good:

Thanks Alan. The mirrors you bought, were they oem Honda or aftermarket?

On the bracket mod, instead of milling the forward bolt hole, would it be possible to leave the forward hole alone and mill the rear hole?

I took the CBR mirrors off the base and used the FJ mirror base. It took some heat as thread lock was involved but I still have the OEM rubber boot.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

The mirrors I bought are OEM used Honda mirrors, and yes you probably could leave the front hole and modify the rear hole. (I'm not sure why I didn't do that :unknown:)

There wouldn't be any possible way to use the FJ mounting base with these mirrors. (at least not with the '89-up FJ base), and you certainly would not be able to use the FJ rubber boot with them.
I am not sure about using '88-earlier bases. They may have different mounting.
These are not the same as the CBR mirrors that a bunch of folks have already used. These are specific to the "250", and use longer stalks.

Great find Alan  :yahoo:

I think I will try a set.

From what I can see..... For those that already have the CBR1000/600 mirrors mounted with the Honda bases, it looks like you can undo the stalk screw and mount the CBR250 stalk to the CBR1000 base.

Having read this post and Alan's wonderful find on the CBR250R mirrors. I pulled the trigger and ordered a set. I have been using a set of CBR1000 mirrors. The CBR1000 mirrors are an incredible improvement over the OEM moose horn mirrors. Although the rearward view was much improved, the inner 1/3rd of the mirrors were filled with my elbows. As I mentioned in the previous post. The 250 mirrors mount perfectly to the 1000 mirror bases. :good:

The CBR250R mirrors give a 100% unobstructed view to the rear.  :yahoo:

I recently did the same mod to my 90. New Honda CBR 250 mirrors, two , for 15 bucks more than one Yamaha mirror.

great white

I was stripping my "moose antlers" to respray them black (PO painted them white to match the rest of bike) and happened upon this thread while waiting for a coat to dry.

Sparked off an old memory in my brain: I had a set of CBR600 mirrors somewhere that I bought to try on my interceptor project before settling on bar end mirrors.

Dug around and found them. Went out and mounted them up and I'll be danged if they don't suit the bike better than the original mirrors.

Hopped on and they even give a better view than the stockers as the glass is  wide vice tall like the yammy ones. I can just see a touch of my elbow, but the view to the side (where you want to see!) is much wider/better.

And, I don't have to strip and paint the other Yammy mirror!

Tomorrow, I'll fix 'em up so both bolts fit the base and make a little plate so I can "clip" the rubber boots down. I want the boots, just to clean up the look if nothing else.

All at no cost for me.

:)

Well, I guess I did buy those mirrors a long time ago.

Now I might keep my eyes open for a cheap set of CBR250 ones..... :good:

great white

I tossed 30 bucks away on an eBay set.

We'll see what shows up at the door.....
