89 FJ1200, foot peg mounting rubbers?

My 89 is a bit of an old hack. As i ride it and go through it, I'm finding the things that have been jacked up by PO's or just neglected.

My pegs are rubber mounted to the bike side plates. Over time and miles, they seem to have gone rather....."limp".

I appreciate that the rubber quells vibration, but is gone so soft that the pegs droop under my weight and sometimes they even drop with a "hitch" or "pop" feeling.

It's not a safety issue, but I don't like the feeling and it takes away from the quality feel the rest of the bike has.

Does anyone know if the rubber is replaceable or do you have to buy the whole peg bracket?

I haven't taken it apart yet (don't want it to possibly fall apart in my hands), so I don't know if it the rubber is removable or not...

Shark, you're obviously handy, pull it off and have a look. I don't know how bad the top rubbers are but it is usually the one at the bottom behind the peg bracket that causes them to drop. It is a loose part and you can't see it without removing the footrest bracket. Dead easy to make something to replace it with once you see what it is.

well, the rubber mounts are pressed in the footpeg.. as far as i know the inserts were never offered seperate. I think they're all the same 84-93. 3cv 27410 (L) & 3cv 27420(R)

I just took a look on Partzilla

  http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1991/FJ1200B/STAND+FOOTREST/parts.html

It appears the bit you want it part #25 which is "obsolete"
Wouldn't be too hard to make one up though.  I'd probably use a rubber stopper (like for a test tube) and cut it down to size.  If you've got a lathe, it would be a 5 min job.

Well damn.

Well, maybe I can turn out some Delrin or poly replacements on the lathe.

Won't be as smooth as rubber, but would get the job done.

Probably vibe just as much as aluminum replacements.

Hmmmmm, now that the juices are flowing, I might be able to make use of some sway bar end link rubbers from a car. I would think it would be similar strength (IE: density) rubber as the peg mounts.

Rubber is not really a "lathe-able" material, but I could sure make up a jig to turn it down to size on the belt sander.

Maybe I can improve on the design a bit. Make an aluminum sleeve and wrap it in a thinner rubber insert. Maybe firm up the feel to a bit more "sporty" but keep a good bit of the vibration damping.

Guess I'm just going to have to chance taking it apart to find out.

Type "rubber bungs" into eBay. The first page alone offers endless products that would suit (with a bit of shaping).

Derlin would be too hard, might as well put steel washers there. You want something that will quell vibrations.

Ace Hardware has rubber caps, the kind you put on the legs of chairs, or on the bottom of crutches or a cane.
I cut them down with a finish grind on my belt sander, problem solved.

I actually just put steel washers in there.   :good2:

Not a lot of vibration going on with the '92 and I frequently stand on my pegs while riding.  This is good for an occasional stretch, gives me a view over the car in front, allows me to see if my headlight is on and breaks up the monotony of a 600-mile slab session (Nevada!!!)  With the rubber mounts, the pegs would droop putting uncomfortable pressure on the inside of my arches.  The steel washers made the pegs nice and solid.

I'll probably spin up some delrin on the lathe and give it a try. It's cheap and easy enough....

Try it and see. Please report back with results.

The original piece is a funny little plug that fits into the end of the cap bolt. Easily lost part.
