Welding OEM mufflers?

A PO has put the wrong year mufflers on my 89. Consequently, they stick out to the rear too much and there's a ginky muffler shop splice piece between teh collector and muffs.

they look like they would fit fine if the bracket was relocated.

Has anyone had any welding done on the OEM muffs?

Are they stainless? Will MIG work or are they too thin (ie: TIG required).

All I'm looking to do is relocate the brackets, no other modifications.

Buying replacements here isn't really an option, they rot out super fast.

I'm not really interested in aftermarket muffs/slip ons either. I like the way it sounds stock. Performance is also fine "as is" for me....

I would think the OEM cans can be MIG welded, I would use 0.025" wire and keep the voltage low. However, if you have access to TIG welder then you know it will not have issues of blowing out the metal, and you get a small tidy weld. I doubt the cans are made of stainless, you already mentioned they rot out super fast. The headers are SST on some years like the '86/'87 and polish up very nice.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.
