I've picked up a set of original mufflers (spares) and decided to put them on my Effie.
They look beautiful, I may even black chrome my current set.
Talk about taking a walk back in time.
Interestingly the gear changes seem tighter, back-pressure?
But boy they are quiet, too quiet....

I actually prefer the oe muffs.

I like the idea of  "speak quietly and carry a big stick".

I also prefer to hear the gear whine over the exhaust. There's just something about that big engine whining up through the years that says precision and speed to me.

But I also fly helicopters so the sound of gears coming together at frightening speeds is comforting to me. It means everything is going properly.

Then there's also the sounds of a gear valve train or blower whine from when I was into drag racing.

Just my preferences. Everyone has their own.

Good point mate. I too like the sound of the FJ winding up. It is one of the unique aspects of the FJ I love.
I've never had an FJ with original mufflers, so it is very new to me.
In the 80's I aspired to taking one back to stock but never got to the mufflers.
I'm going to leave them on for the time being as the carbs are jetted to original spec, and the wife prefers the 'stealth mode'.
I'm going to have to get used to the quieter engine. I buggered up some gear changes as I couldn't really hear the motor as I'm used to hearing it.
Interestingly, I'm also in to blade slapping, mostly Robbos, with the occasional squirrel .
