Hello. My names Ramon and I just picked up a 86 fj1200 for $300 from a buddy. Its currently not running. It sat for 8 years before I got it. I don't seam to be getting any spark and the coils are only getting 10 volts. I'm pretty sure they should be getting a full 12 volts, right?  But, anyways I just wanted to put my intro in here and get my feet wet. Thanks guys and looking forward to any help or tips I can get.

Welcome Ramon. After 8 years I am guessing the battery is new, are you getting 12+ volts at the battery? What voltage reading (at the battery) do you measure while cranking? Have you done anything to the carbs? After that much time any fuel left in them will turn to a dried varnish like substance and clog nearly every working part of the carbs. I recommend getting your carbs rebuilt, either by your self, if you are good with mechanics or send them to RPM. See link below. Plan on new tires, please don't ride on tires that old other than up or down your dive way at low speed. Flush out and bleed your clutch and brakes. Fresh oil and filter. Check your air filter, owners have reported finding rodent nesting there. Keep us posted on your progress. Hope you can make the West Coast Rally next year.

Fjmonkey, you got it. I put a new battery in and have cleaned the carbs, new air filter, oil change and spark plugs. I have bled the rear brakes and clutch but the front master is locked up so I will be getting a new one. I have not checked the voltage while cranking but it is turning over really well. I just don't have spark. Thanks .

Welcome Ramon ! You have a project there. As far as the voltage go's rarely is there a full 12.7/12.8 volts at the coils because of all the switch's and connectors in the circuit before the coils but you should have more than 10 volts.  As the bike is new to you and has been sitting for a long time I would start at the bottom and work up.  First the battery has to be in good shape.  It is the heart of the bike.

The bike is 29 years old.. And who knows what has been done or neglected  by previous owners.  You say it "seems" to not be getting any spark. Did you pull the plugs and see visually ?

You lucky because where you live there are a lot of really excellent members that know the FJ inside and out.  If you can spend a little time with one of them they can teach you more in a hour or two than you could learn in a year by yourself.  Start a thread over in the FJ 1100 / 1200 Running Problems section and you will get more help and advice there.  The knowledge base of the members is extensive.

I'm making the assumption that you turned your kill switch to the "Run" position, correct?

Sorry, but I need to ask: Steve, will the '86 crankle with killswitch in "Off" Position? My '92 3YA won't, just Oil and Fuel lamps in the dash are burnin'...

Might be because of US-Versions?

Due to the missing sparks I think I'd check wiring & plugs of the pickup, the CDI and the coils. Esp. worn out connectors cause high resistance.

Good luck with getting the old girl running. These things have more pull than a 15 year old virgin when running right. easy to work on too.

My mistake.

With the kill switch off, the FJ won't crank.

...but it will on a Honda CB-350F . (which I'm dealing with at work!)

Guess I'm gettin' my projects mixed up. Sure hope I can keep the engines straight! (How'd that 1200 engine get in the 350 chassis???)
