After taking the long route to work this morning I noticed a  nice shine to my left boot??
After a few confusing seconds I checked the bike over and noticed a small drip of oil from the coil pick up cover, so I believe that im going to be needing to do the crankshaft seal. The only problem ive got is I can not seem to find any one who stocks them in the uk so I might have to get one shipped over from the good old U S of A.
I have had good look with the search function to see if there are any tips or walk trough's on changing the crankshaft seal.
Hopefully some of you can help point me in the right direction

cheers

You will need to pry out the old seal, if your current seal is OEM, it will likely come out in a few pieces. Save the pieces so you know you got it all. The OEM seal has a flange on it, and it is now hard rubber. The new seal will not have a flange on it, it is not required. Once the old one is out, find drift about the width of the seal and slowly tap it in as you work around the seal a few time. Really easy. When prying out the old seal take care in not damaging the sealing surfaces, take your time and with patience you will do a good job of it.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

awesome wasn't sure if there was going to be any special tools needed. just a bit more searching for someone in the uk that has them now even the local yam dealer said they couldn't get one which was a shock.

Life isn't about having the best, but about making the best of what you have...

Probably supersedes to what ever number this is http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Engine%3ACrankshaftSeal as it says FJ1100-XJR1300 but not 100% sure. Also I think I saw a seal puller on RPM as well probably makes the job easier.

George I missed what you had written.  :good2: That's the one.

Fowlers is a UK parts place I have used twice recently and they are very good. Their parts website is excellent. They also happen to have the crank seal in stock.

Like the other links, number 2 on the following webpage:

Just a sanity check.

Does the new seal from Yamaha have a lip on it?

If so, then you probably don't want that?

The seal with the lip was an assembly aid in putting the cases together, all new OEM seals do not have this lip, just like the one RPM has pictured.
