double lined exhaust headers

Glad I searched the internet when I got this bike and stumbled onto this site. If it weren't for a couple knowledgeable people I would have probably never known that my particular bike had double lined headers. The sound it produced when the inside pipe broke free and pinged off the outer pipe was all bad to me. Took a piece of hose and listen to each one and found the second one playing all the music. So I just drilled four holes in the outer pipe and file em full of hot molten mig wire and good to go until I change em out.

Yea, I know that sound.... :bad:

That sound is fucking awful....I had it happen to me in the middle of a tour...I had to ride a couple thousand miles listening to that racket....fucking awful.

I pulled the '84's head pipes off and got a set of '86 single wall stainless pipes and never looked back.
All the different year FJ head pipes are interchangeable**, all FJ's from '86 to '93 use the same single wall stainless tubes.

**Not to be confused with interchangeability between cylinders...they are not interchangable between cylinders. The pipes are numbered 1 thru 4 corresponding to the cylinders they fit and mate to the collector box.

I have been told that those single wall stainless tubes do polish up nicely...

I love this. We have had many "mechanics" join (and leave) the forum who, having just finished impressing us with their credentials and experience and almost in the same breath, out themselves by asking a stupid question or making a stupid statement.

Only a real mechanic would come up with this solution, love it.

Yes, sometimes this has happened here, but that's part of a free motorcycle forum experience.

However, I feel there's a good number of knowledgeable folks on this forum that have meaningful tips or experiences to offer. Some that are either passive (lurkers) by choice, and those who are gun-shy about posting their help/tips because they have witnessed others with good intentions being beat down or derided for what they have offered. I and probably others can recall a certain, very active, FJ- knowledgeable Texan that was a long-time member here, leave due to having to defend his comments constantly. Before leaving, he commented about this site being different in that respect. I tend to agree with that, at times.

On another forum that I belong too, there's a section called Experts on Everything. Perhaps one like this should be implemented here for the self-appointed experts and members with God-like status due to their seniority on this site or serial-postings, so that those who post there, know the waters that they are wading into, and what to be prepared for when they ask or offer something. And perhaps have another section for lesser souls, who have many good things to offer, want to offer them, and can do so without fearing trepidation.

There's reasons why the Most Online Today number rarely is seen above 20, and it's not just because the Mighty FJ is not as popular as it once was.

^^ My two cents. Do what you want with it.

Great, then it'll be full of questions like "Why does it burn when I pee?"

You're right, though. This *IS* the internet(s). Can we REALLY trust anything we read here???

Good fix with the weld spots. If it works, it can't be all bad!

Wouldn't work, the entire forum would just start posting there immediately.

The Texan your refer to, was only challenged when he was dead set wrong on a particular topic, and he didn't like it.
You say he left because he "had to defend his comments constantly" So what, isn't that how it should be? You mention God-like status, did he see himself as being above that? I get more of that thrown at me than anyone here. If you going to put information out there you have to be prepared to stand behind it. If it won't stand up to scrutiny from the forum, it shouldn't be posted in the first place.

Creating a level playing field to encourage others to participate is a noble idea but I can't see it working. Do the self appointed experts and God complex members have to self nominate or is it by secret poll. Assuming they are disliked by the lesser souls required to vote, who is going to acknowledge their superior knowledge?
If the ones that know everything are all in one section, there's nothing for them to talk about, they know everything already. Are they allowed to offer help if they see the lesser mortals floundering around in need of assistance or do they have to wait for an express invite to join in the conversation.
If a lesser mortal gets ten answers right in a row are they automatically elevated to the God chamber?
Do the smart arses that know everything get a lapel badge and have a secret handshake?
Do they get to ride out front?

Seriously, it is the mix of people here that make it interesting, including the ones you love to hate. Sanitising the forum would only see numbers drop lower. Do you know when numbers spike?, when there's an on line stoush.
Separate the classes and it becomes a much less interesting place and dare I say, a quieter one. How would you police a 2 tier forum anyway.

My 2 cents worth.

Lapel badge??? THERE'S A LAPEL BADGE??? Why wasn't I told?

Oh, yeah...it's the "know everything" part. Never mind.
