While doing a "fj1200" search on ebay this item appeared and, if it works, doesn't seem like a bad thought to me.

has anyone tried a fender extension, and if so..comments?

thanks,

I have used one for about 18 months. They work as intended.

One drawback is that if you just use the small sheet metal screws, be prepared to have the screws loosen and destroy both the extender and your rear half of front fender. Don't ask me how I know this.

Leon (1tinindian) did a write up on using RTV sealant to mount the extender. I followed that mounting advise and have had wonderful results.

Actually Fred, I used a two part epoxy for plastic to attach mine.
I hated the idea of the ugly screws going into the plastic fender.
Once set, mine has been rock solid and looks good to me.
Having trouble getting a picture right now, but I did mine to help the rock chipping on my lower fairing.
I'm still going to install some 3M clear protective film on it too.

Using silicon sealant would be an excellent idea provided both surfaces are clean. It is a great adhesive, flexible and extremely heat resistant. Works on almost any surface. Available at Home Depot, Walmart or any hardware store in a variety of colors and cheap. No I don't sell it for a living.  Dave

My recent FJ came with a fender extender. More like an old fashioned mudflap. It was flared out towards the bottom but I cut that off, just too trailer park looking. It seems to be bonded on with silicone or shoe-goo.... The extension is a thick fiber reinforced rubber like material. So it it flexes and will not stress the rear fender if hit. Less expensive then the Ebay option but more mudflap looking...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.
