Tools: New Bench Buffer

Well folks, after over 50 years of use my dad's 3/4hp buffer motor finally died...kind of sad actually, oh well...

I just ordered a new 1hp 2 speed model with 10" buffing wheels:


Monkey Mark, plan bringing those ss header tubes out in April. I've got a stick of black cutting compound that should work on removing those machine lines on the stainless...

What's the purpose of the pointy bit on the right side shaft? That's new to me.

It allows for different wheels to be changed quickly. They are LH & RH threaded (for the L & R sides of the bench grinder)

The centres of the buffing wheels have a nylon flange fixed onto the outer surface on both sides that crudely threads onto the tapered shaft (in the opposite direction to the load) They are there for just that purpose.



It enables quick changes of wheels, a few seconds, spin one off, spine one on. So, you have one bench grinder and a number of wheels. The centre of the wheel has no thread, it sort of self taps on and is not under any great load so the the wheels can be changed endlessly.
I have a number of wheels and polishes but really only use one wheel, one polish for pretty much everything.

The pointy bit can be used for different fabric wheels. Mine has a wire wheel on the left and just the pointy shaft on the right. I can quickly swap between different cloth wheels in a few seconds. There's really no need for the wheels to be fixed to the shaft.
