So tell me fellas what is the advantage of a V&H exhaust over original FJ  exhaust. It sounds different but is there a performance gain.

This is my opinion, others may differ.  :flag_of_truce:

Advantages

1. Lighter weight. V&H exhaust is about 16 lbs lighter that OEM exhaust.
2. Sound, your FJ won't sound like a sewing machine.
3. Jetted properly, slight performance gains in the higher RPM range.

Disadvantages

1. You will lose access to your oil drain plug.
2. The super sport version will have the head pipes rust badly within 2 years.
3. Jetted properly, some loss of midrange performance.

Save your pennies and get the RPM exhaust.

Actually my bike came with the V&H and besides the pain in the rear changing oil I just find it too loud. I have repacked the baffle but its  still loud.  I would like to know what the V&H sounds like on a FJ when it passes by .  I must say I do like the sound of the OEM exhausts when heard on youtube.

Hey wild I have a V&H exhaust I took off the bike I just bought. To make my turbo bike out of obviously won't be needing it its rough. I was going to polish and paint it and then sell it. But I'll sell it as is to you for $50.And I'm coming down to the international bike show in Chicago next Sunday. Could deliver it there. You could clean it up. Use it. And if you don't like it sell it.

I have a supertrap stainless with a down turned tip on my 86 1350. It sounds great, but yes a little loud. But on my 89 I have 2 supertrap slippons and down turn tips. With the stock headers and collector. And I love the way that sounds

What type of baffle packing did you use? Fiberglass type or stainless steel wool?

I have an '89 FJ with the stock exhaust. It's pretty much whisper quiet. I've had more close calls with pedestrians, joggers & bicyclists on this bike than my louder bikes. They just can't hear me coming & they move out into the road.

Giant thanks for the exhaust  offer anyways.  I did not know there was a bike show on next Sunday. I might go to it myself. Where is it been held.

JM I used fiberglass. It was a improvement as the original owner had removed the baffle completely but still loud.

I don't know how long 'glass lasts as a silencing material in an FJ exhaust. Some of the after-market dirt-bike fiberglass packing is very dense. Stainless steel wool in theory should not need re-packing after the first installation. I don't know which is quieter.

If it's still too loud... You're not going fast enough to outrun the noise.

I agree with JM...I feel like the louder exhaust (I've got a V&H 4:1) raises awareness to my presence on the road, therefore not quite as easy for my fellow commuters to "forget" that there is a bike in their proximity (easy to do you know, so much multitasking going on inside the cages...very little processing left for actually being engaged with the primary task at hand).  As mentioned though, oil changes are a hassle.  My $.02.
