Looks like your original Q never took hold, but I'm surprised no one marked the recent (yesterday) passing of the Great Joe Cocker. And who could forget John Belushi's impersonations of him. Joe even did a duo with him on SNL. That's somewhere on Youtube someplace.

I generally stick to bike talk here but Joe Cocker's death was certainly the end of an era for me. I grew up with him, danced in the isles at his concerts, enjoyed an "artificially enhanced" appreciation of his live performances and "Hitchcock Railway" has been on every driving compilation I've ever made.

Even with his gravelly, wavering voice, no one could do "You are so beautiful" like him, and it has been covered many times.

In the absence of rock star looks, media presence and slick stage moves (that's an understatement!) he was an unlikely superstar, but the music said it all.

Yeah, Joe Cocker takes me back to a great time in my life. So many great memories and great times were accompanied by his music, an 8 track vibrating door panels off some '60 or '70s rocket.

I enjoyed the special occasion of seeing Hackett at the Mod Club in Toronto 4 years ago. Free admission.  :yahoo:
You listen to people like that working together on stage and you know why they are the lifetime consummate professionals. It's just magical how they pass the lead phrase back and forth so smoothly you lose track of whether it's the guitar, or the oboe or the keyboard.
The opening act was Renaissance, a pre-cursor of the progressive rock movement. We interviewed the two main members in the green room before they went on. Just super nice regular people with miles of talent. Annie Haslam has approximately the vocal range of Mariah Carey, without all the BS stylizing - and she's no spring chicken. Youtube a few of their songs.
The next year I was meeting Jim McCarty of the Yardbirds. What do you say to the guy that hired Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page to be his lead guitarists? LOL.
