Since my FJ is my primary commuter, I like to track fuel economy and try to maximize it wherever possible.  The best way to do this I've found is by logging your fuel ups on your phone using Fuelly's mobile website.  www.fuelly.com  I've been using this on my Tacoma since day one, and it's great to look back and track fuel prices, average cost per mile, etc.  For anyone who wants to compare MPG, create an account and post the "badge" in here!

I thought of recording mpg just before my '67 Dodge Van's speedometer died. So with my next vehicle I bought a medium sized note book and wrote down all fill up data in the front and all maintenance starting on the back page working forward. I'm on my fifth vehicle, and notebook since stating that in 1982. For my bikes I have always figured out my gas milage on each tank, but I don't record it.  I can get about 50 mpg on the 650, sometimes 50 on the Venture, way back I always got just 40 mpg. On the FJ I have gotten as little as 35, but now I get 48-54 mpg.  I've slowed down a lot the last 3 years. I'll tell my two bike daughter about www.fuelly.com.

I used to do the notebook thing on my first vehicle, a '77 Toyota Pickup, because the gas gauge would drop to E only 30 miles after a fill up.  Could only track my fuel level by the odometer reading.  My dad would also do the same on his '64 Chevy 1/2 ton, except he wrote it on the sun visor, then would paint over it when it got full and start over.  I finally convinced him to replace the speedometer cable.

For reference, I also track my truck, which is why I needed a commuter bike:
