Hi everyone! I've just inherited an '85 FJ from my step-dad after he jumped ship onto a ZZR. I enjoyed a couple of quick rides and a few issues have presented themselves.

I have a feeling I'll be picking everyone's brains in the maintenance sections fairly soon...

Welcome fellow Ambulance rider, what part of the world do ride in? An intro with a picture, that's a good start. Happy to have you aboard this floating loony bin. Kookalooo.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

'86 Ambulance - Bent frame, cracked case, due for an overhaul

Welcome ! Feel free to ask questions, lots of help here. What part of the world do you live in ?

Ah yeah, I'm in Perth, Australia

I've got a list already, I'll be pulling the carbs off this week for a clean out, soon after will be a choke cable from Japan as apparently there are none here, then valve stem seals and it's all done! Apart cosmetic stuff...

Is there a sticky somewhere about mods or preventative things that everyone should do which are specific to the FJ? Like safety wiring the petcock and replacing the brake lines?

Great looking FJ and welcome to the group.  :hi:

A great place to look for FJ parts is RPM. Very reasonable shipping rates to Australia.

Some good mods would be.

The 16" front and rear wheels can limit your choices on rubber.

Much more expensive mods, but very well worth it, is....All three mods are pretty much bolt on.

1988-1996 FJ1200 forks.

17" FJ1200 front wheel, or if you can find a 87'/88' FZR1000/750R front wheel. 89'/90' FZR front wheels will not work without a lot of modifying.

1990-1995 GSXR750/1100 17"x5.5" rear wheel. The benefit is having the Front and Rear tires 17 inches and allows fitment of modern radial tires in the most commom sport bike tire size. 120/70/17 and 180/55/17

I'm not the fastest FJ rider, I am 'half-fast', the fastest slow guy....

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah it was a surprise for sure, and it's a bit of a step up from the old GPX250

Thanks for the advice. There's a bit of a backlog in license tests here so there'll be a fair bit of time to get it right before I can 'legally' ride it

Ewww, I don't like restrictions. whats the deal ? Do you have like a displacement limit on bikes over there and you have to work your way up and keep paying and testing to move up to bigger bikes?

Yeah, they use what's called LAMS now... umm... learner accredited motorcycle something. There's a power/weight restriction so you can't kill yourself as hard as you can with a big bike . This is a recent thing, when I got my licence only 8 years or so ago (ugh) it was a hard limit of 250cc (or 150cc I think for 2-stroke). It only cost about $70 for their 'permission' to 'learn' to ride it and get 'tested'. The problem is the testers are booked out for months. Oh well.

Thanks! I have the air scoops, they're in my step-dad's house somewhere. What I really want is the chin spoiler
