New fj owner

Hi I've just became the owner of a 1991 fj1200 owned it for about a week covered around 200 miles so far, am quite impressed so far but might look at the wheel mods so I can fit better rubber. I'm from sunny Birmingham uk not that it's very sunny here at the moment. I cover about 50000 a year on my bike so any hints or tip to help keep the bike running and riding to its best would be  very welcome. Cheers pete

Hi Pete, welcome to the forum, the guys here know the Fj inside out and upside down, if you have any problems someone here will know the answer. Check this site out http://fjclub.co.uk/ they do a kit for the rear wheel conversion, they also do servicing etc. and club rides. For spares there's

As long as it's been looked after you shouldn't have any probs. they are as bullet proof as they come. I've got a '93 that's just ticked over 90,000kms and with a few mods just keeps getting better and better, I've never had to touch the engine apart from usual maintenance.

Welcome to the group,   50,000 mile of kilometers is a lot of riding in a year. For preventive maintenance and parts there are 2 places to go to support FJ friendly businesses. In the UK is http://fjclub.co.uk/ and from the U.S. is  http://www.rpmracingca.com/ The shipping rates at RPM in the U.S. to the UK are very reasonable and timely. A few mods that will make life much more enjoyable with putting high mileage on your FJ are .... RPM spin-on oil filter adaptor, it will make oil and filter changes a breeze. Exhaust, there are a few after market exhausts that restrict access to the oil drain plug. If your FJ has a OEM rear shock, you may consider replacing with an after market one. There are a few brands to choose from. Top on the list would be the RPM rear shock, Also there is YSS, Hagon, Nitron, Wilbers, and Penske.

For the 17" rear wheel mod, both of these links cover the same wheels. The first one is all text and gives you all the model years that will work, the second link gives very good assembly directions with plenty of photos.

All the parts are generally easy to source on eBay.

If you are a Yamaha purist and want to go with a Yamaha 17" rear wheel the mod is much more difficult and machining of parts are required.

Welcome Pete ! Check out the files section, lots of good information there.  One of the nice things about the FJ is all the help that is available worldwide and still a lot of them on the road.  Lot you can do to improve or update the bike if you want.  As is they are great bike.

Cheers guys glad to know there's help out there, it's 50000 miles my family is spread out over most of the county and I only have the bike witch pushes the mileage up. Will let you know how I get on with the fj and any of the mods I do
