order of abs light

hi all.im fixing up a fj1200 i bought a few months ago.its more or less ready for m.o.t test bar one problem.i cant get the abs light to stop flashing.when i turn on the ignition on the light comes on,then off.start the bike,still off.move the bike and it starts flashing.a guy told me today that an abs light is meant to flash at the start then go out when the bike moves.if that is the case is mine wired wrong?

My ABS light would come on when you turned the bike on and go out when the bike started. Just like a car does. The light would flash when the ABS was engage or when doing a burn out. I think you have a problem somewhere. Start by checking the fuses and connections, Hope this helps.

So they are going to make you "fix" something that's been out of production for 20 years and most of them broke over 15 years ago.  Plus, I'm sure there are no available parts to fix it with.  So a $5 part that's gone bad renders the whole bike unsafe?  That sounds like good government thinking, got to protect the public from themselves....

Ranting aside, I think from the description of your symptom you've got a bad wheel sensor (it's registering motion on one wheel but not the other).  Maybe check the sensor connections.  Or, maybe disconnect both wheel sensors and see if that stops it.

Connect the ABS bulb to the oil level light. When the ignition is turned on it will illuminate the ABS light. This should fool the MOT inspector.  :diablo:  Pete.

As a former LMCT and Licenced RWC Tester, I imagine the same basic rules apply there as here, if it's fitted, it has to work.
While Hooligans comment is absolutely true, it has no relevance to the inspection. You can remove it completely, even though it was original equipment, no worries, but if it's fitted at the time of inspection it has to work, no matter how impractical that might be.
Tester licences are a licence to print money and they are not going to put it at risk just to do you a favour or because common sense suggests a deviation from the rules, they will do it by the book. It's not them being dicks, it's the regulators who control their licences. Their livelihood is at the whim of some snotty nosed public servant who wouldn't know a piston from a cigarette lighter but unfortunately they wield the authority

Connecting the ABS light to the oil light is probably the best idea so far and hope the tester is an old school mechanic still coming to terms with this new fangled gadgetry and he doesn't pick up on it.
Some vehicles do only display it at start up but mine (car)for example, stays on until you reach 17kph regardless of time.

Just wire it up to the oil light an go for it, if it doesn't catch his eye it will be a non event.

is the oil level light meant to come on when ignition is turned on?mine does'nt.the buld is ok and the oil level light did come on when level was low.things have got worse.i went to clean the sensors and broke the rear one trying to prise it off.the metal part is still in there and i cant get it out.its seized in solid.now the light is on constant :dash2:

Sorry for not posting this sooner, but my bike was apart for valve/carburetor adjustments.

Mine is a 1992 FJ1200 ABS model and behaves in the following way:

Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position:
Neutral indicator light comes on and stays on
ABS light comes on for 1-2 seconds...a click is heard from the tail of the bike and the ABS light goes off

Hit the starter button (while cranking):
Neutral light remains on
The Oil Level light comes on just for a moment then goes off when the engine starts
The ABS light comes on just for a moment then goes off (I suspect this is just repeat of the above due to momentary low voltage)

Engine is running:
Neutral light remains on
All other lights are off

The only time I've had the ABS light come on is when I've run the bike (In gear) up on the center stand.  At those times, the ABS light will just slowly flash on and off.  Shutting the bike off using the key and restarting it, clears the flashing ABS light.
