1986 FJ1200 Brake line replacement

Hey all,

Just looking for some advice. I am in the process of going over my "new to me" 86 FJ1200, and should get the brake lines as well as the clutch line replaced. I assume they are old if not original rubber lines. I have done a bit of searching on the site and have found a few threads but nothing very specific. Could be that I have not found a good thread yet outlining options, but might as well ask. I saw that someone had mentioned spiegler lines and xjr, but was wondering if anyone can recommend a brand?

Dude, the clutch line is a lower issue. The clutch is much lower pressure. Make sure it is not leaking... Is the clutch line bad???

Do the clutch line at a later date. One third is rigid steel and uses less pressure. Galfer and Spiegler are probably the most commonly used. Some members do not care for the Spieglers for various reasons.

I personally have a set of Goodridge braided lines and I highly recommend them. Here is an eBay link to give you an idea of cost.

Yes, there is plenty somewhere on the subject. Fortunately I've never had to try and find it.

People here tend to promote whatever brand they bought as being the best. I don't know how you pick good from bad brake lines but in my opinion it doesn't matter. I cannot see any justification for the very expensive lines, unless you're into branding.

The only thing I would suggest is to get rotatable banjos. If they are fixed and the orientation isn't quite right when you fit them up it will put the line under torsional stress and it will kink which will make routing them difficult.

I think most of the popular brands have that feature but just make sure. I bought Venhill lines because they were at the cheaper end of the range and are a reputeable and known manufacturer.

I wouldn't be too fussed about the clutch line. Do it if you want, they look cool but that's about it, unlike the brake lines which give a vast improvement in efficiency. While on that subject, many find the standard FJ rear brake a little too sensitive and SS line will make it more so. For this reason you may want to keep the rubber line on the back, entirely a personal thing.

I've been trying to replace a brake line and Spiegler was a pain in the ass to work with.  Venhill, however, went out of their way with getting me exactly what I needed.

Also, their banjo/fitting is a great combination for making sure the line is not kinked.  I mounted the banjos on the master and front splitter first then attached the line.  Was able to position the line exactly how I wanted it to run.  Much more convenient and easier than the Spiegler adjustable banjo.

If anyone is looking for custom braklelines, definitely consider Venhill!

I would like help confirming a custom brake line order at

Please look at this proposed order, and let me know if I have made errors whereby fitting the lines will be difficult.
Where I have the most doubt is the selection of the Bolt 1 and Bolt 2.
I selected Select Bolt 1    10mm x 1.00 Single-Length
I don't know what that is in the set.
I planned to use the existing Bango bolts.

I went to a local hydraulic shop, which is a franchise of Pirtek. They make hoses for industrial equipment, and they also make brake lines to order. I brought in my original lines, and they duplicated them in teflon-cored stainless braided   vinyl sheathed hose while I waited.

Now, I don't know if you have Pirtek where you are, but I bet there is a hydraulics shop in town. Check with them, price might surprise you.

Those are banjo bolt options.   Some like to run double lines from the master to the calipers.  That would require one of the banjos to be a double.

I also reused the original banjo bolts (with new crush washers).

I ended up taking the old rubber hoses to a hydraulic shop in National City and they made up a set of three hoses.
