Shimming Needles

Hello all,

So from what I have read and been told I should shim my needles after I put on the pod filters. I found in the file section why I should do this but is there a thread on how? What size washers do I need? Do you just pull the needle and put the washer under it?

You may already have them. You need to check. If you need to order them Yamaha part number 2H0-14235-00-00. One per carburetor.

Send me an email and I will get you all dialed in on carbs based on your specific requirements.

I just checked that number provided by Kurt and that is a discontinued part. I am also not sure if that needle will work as it appears they were used on a mechanical slide carb, not a CV carb.

If I remember correctly, those shim washers were all the same. Just got the number off of the ones I have.

No worries, I just wanted to research the number and see if it was something I could put in stock for these moments, but since that part number is obsolete, I will keep looking.

Just pulled apart my "spare" bank of carbs. I had put them on the bike as they had appeared to have been rebuilt (stainless allen head screws and 40 pilot jets)...and yet after a carb synch would still pop and have slow throttle response doing the throttle blip test...so I decided to investigate further.
I found they had stock (112.5) mains, 40 pilots and 155 air jets. I have on order a set of 115 mains...but when I removed the needle from one of the slides, I found the circlip atop the nylon washer in the fourth (lowest) ring on the needle...also weird was that the "shim" washer was on top of the circlip! I thought the purpose of the "shim" washer was to raise the needle? Am I missing something?

Ride mostly in Charlotte but do get up to Deal's Gap occasionally

Oh, and the carbs must have been redone...they were clean as a whistle!

Mike,

The OEM washer is exactly 1/2 the thickness of the distance between the grooves on the needle.
The washer is 0.5mm thick and the grooves are 1.0mm apart.
This lets you adjust the height of the needle in 0.5mm steps.

for those who are metrically challenged, 1mm = ~0.040 inch.

Thanx for the quick reply...and I do realize that the washer is half the thickness of the rings for the circlip...but what I don't understand is how come the washer is on top of the circlip and not under the nylon. Is the small washer supposed to be up there where the circlip rings are...or under the nylon(thus raising)?

That is not weird, that is how they are supposed to be installed. The washer seats against the spring and holds the needle down at the bottom of the bore to prevent it from walking up in the plastic piece.

If you want to shim the needle, you need to get another washer to put under the circlip and leave the stock washer on top of the circlip.

Thanx Randy for clearing that up. Doing a valve clearance check now...just to be sure I don't have and valves not closing. My manual is very lacking when it comes to doing this. Have done it several times on the 750 Nighthawk. Looking now for a thread on that here...usually one of the intakes can be measured at the same time as an exhaust...but nothing references that in my manual.

Thanx JMR...as it turns out I had a bag of a dozen that fit the bill perfectly that I got on eBay for another application. Just waiting for my 40's to arrive. Have to swap some valve shims as well. Randy had suggested that I check valve clearance as a possible cause of the popping...he was right...got some that are tight.
