Hi Everyone, recently picked up an 84 fj1100 and 86 fj1200. The 1100 was owned by an old guy and runs really well except for clutch rattle which doesn't affect shifting. Common? Fixes? It's a bit rough in the body and the 4-1 zorst is attached to a cheapie can with sealant tape. Going to rip that off tomorrow to see why its on there.
The 1200 was last registered in 08 and is in great nick except needs left mirror anyone got one or know the best place. It doesn't run at low revs unless choke is on but once the revs get up runs well. Going to try fresh fuel and carbie cleaner first. I still haven't got a manual. How hard is it to get to the needles and jets to check for goo? Sorry about the long first post off work at the moment so have time to play.

Welcome and congrats on the bikes.

Clutch sounds more like a starter chain they rattle sometimes but nothing to worry about.

Try the fuel and cleaner but a pull down and clean is not to hard. Carbs would be full varnish and stuff.

Welcome ! Sounds like you have a project to work on. Everything is fixable on the FJ. Take some time and read through the files section on carbs. You will probably have to pull and clean them if the bikes have been sitting that long. 

The bike is easy to work on after you get familiar with where all the bits and pieces are. There are mods you can do along the way that you can consider like getting rid of that big air box and installing Uni Pods also converting to a spin on oil filter etc.  Not required by any means but just makes things easier.  Service manuals will become essential items with with your FJ's.  Best to be your own expert on your FJ's. 

Mirrors, do some reading.  The stock mirrors are crap to be blunt.  They do not stick far enough out to be effective.  All you can see is your elbows.  I wouldn't waste money on stock mirrors.  There are some aftermarket mirrors that work better and cheaper.  Do a search on "mirrors" you will get lots of information.

Thanks fellas, got the 1200 running pretty well with fresh fuel and carb cleaner. Good excuse for a good hot run once I do an oil and filter change. I like the look and idea of the spin on filter. I was thinking about k&n for the filter if I was going to go uni pods how do you get the damn airbox out?? The RPM site, how good is that!! Thanks for the advice on mirrors going to check out third gear on ebay. Looking forward to it Darran.

The K&N filters filters let too much dust through, use the UNI pods.  You can remove the top rear subframe bolts and tilt the down. This provides the room to get the box out. The RIM site is the best place for your FJ. Randy makes all kinds of custom goodies for us.  Good prices and quick shipping. I use him all the time.

Someone gave a tip to push the rubber collars into the air box-gives a bit more clearance to get the box out (sorry I don't remember who). Then remove the snorkel on the left (clutch) side -3 screws- and the box slides right out.

Set your warm idle to 1000rpm, no +-
you're gonna have to run the choke when it's cold, which is 30seconds then ride it for a couple minutes with choke still on, or 4-5 minutes in neutral.

far as the carbs go, if it's new to you and been sitting just buy the kit from randy and tear it apart. it's easy and will save you troubleshooting headaches later to get that done early.

Should I get my mechanic to adjust it when he does the roadworthy cert.He is a Yammy dealer he might have the tricky tool.

Flick it clockwise with a long screwdriver, pretty easy to turn and wont take much to get it to 1000rpm

Yes Steve, up to temperature and running........ as mentioned, you can use a long flat blade screwdriver to just push on the knob - winding it in (ie up) increases idle....... I've found the easiest way is wearing my gloves with a hot engine will do the trick.
