Hello All,

I just purchased Randy's pod air filters. Hopefully I'll have them next week. Was just curious after putting them on do I have to make any adjustments to the carbs? Thanks

Do you have a aftermarket exhaust system?

I recommend 117.5 mains, #40 pilots and shim the jet needles.

At the minimum, shim the jet needles. It's easy, you don't have to remove the carbs.

No I have stock exhaust. Ok how would you go about shimming the needles? Have not done this before. Thanks

what groove is the needle clip placed in when shimming the needle? I will be rejetting my Carbs when I get back and was curious about needle set up.

If you have stock carbs then you will need to shim the needles up, raise them with a small (tiny) washer. However, if you stock exhaust, you may not need to shim them. The stock air box and exhaust are both flow restrictions. Both need to opened up before air flow is improved enough for needle changes. The #40 pilot is a change you can make anytime and enjoy an improvement. Aftermarket needles have additional grooves in them allowing for changes by moving the clip up or down in the grooves.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

This might be a dumb question but Can you open up a stock exhaust?

I've got aftermarket cans on the FJ, and I thought I would have to change the carb settings a bit when I put on the Unifilters. But everything is sweet, no idling probs or hesitation etc. Of course this won't be the case for everyone.

Sure, you can knock the baffles out of the stock mufflers for a flow through system.

Tim, as I already stated in your other post about the needles, shoot me an email and I can get you dialed in on carbs.

Best just to get Randy's advice. He's literally built hundreds of sets of carbs.

But for what it's worth...

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.
