I'm looking at a 1990 FJ1200, appears to be well maintained, but the mileage is 158,000. Should I steer clear or what should I be looking for ?

Welcome ! Boy that's a loaded question !. Not enough data.  Yes it is a lot of miles.. You have to find out its history. There are some high mileage FJ's around but they are maintained and treated exceptionally well.  Is it the original engine? Has it been rebuilt ? With that many miles you have to wonder about head bearings, wheel and swing arm bearings, shock, chain, sprockets, carbs, gages, cables, brake pads and lines etc.. How mechanically inclined are you?  Is is extremely cheap? Is all the plastic there?  I guess that's some of the questions on my end.  For 1500 to 2800 here in the U.S. you can buy a pretty nice FJ if you shop around a little. A core can be anything from hauling it off to 1000.00 but expect to dump in a few thousand + if you want to restore it.

Best money spent is buying one in good to excellent shape to start with unless you just want a project (I live in that world)..... :dash2:
Post some pictures that might help a little.  Where do you live?  Perhaps a local FJ member could assist you as they know what to look for. More data ?
