Will this fit? I've searched this forum up and down and I can't find anything definitive. Some people say if it takes a backrest and it's a corbin, then a corbin style backrest will fit, period. Others say there is a difference between east and west coast fits. Another guy said he had a corbin backrest for a bmw corbin that didn't fit on his fj corbin if he remembers right, but luckily the guy who sold himt he fj with corbin later gave him a backrest to go with it that did fit.

?!?!?!   :ireful:

Anyways, this backrest is a good deal. I'm trying to compare the angle with the pics here:

Any advice, people?

The Amazon ad says "Corbin and other seats that accept a backrest with a 5/8" square stem that is 4 1/2" long."

So I say, yes it will fit, 5/8" if I recall correctly is what is required.   However, you may want to consider a backrest with a longer stem as it will allow you to be able to slide it out / up and that will move it back a little as well.  This is an adjustment you may want for the comfort of your passenger.

I'm going off memory on all of this.  I've sold my stock Corbin backrest and modified the one to fit my custom seat, so hopefully others will chime in with some stem lengths off their Corbin backrests..   (there's just no way to write that that doesn't sound wrong...)

Kyle,

This one is currently for sale on eBay and is similar to mine. The only difference is mine has red piping

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Driver-Passenger-Backrest-For-Corbin-Seat-Honda-Yamaha-Mustang-BMW-Triumph-/400392287336?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d393d7468&vxp=mtr#ht_2725wt_916

One added bonus that the knock-off backrest has over the authentic Corbin backrest is, it will fold forward enough to allow the top box lid to open all the way.

Here is what it looks like on the FJ.

My Corbin backrest looks just like the one that markmartin pictured in the thread you linked.

I bought it (gently used) about 10 years ago on eBay from a BMW dealer who insisted it would only fit BMWs.

It was just like any other one I could find at the time, and fit perfectly.

I should have read your original post more thoroughly. 4-1/2" sounded short, but upon reading my own post in the link,  :dash2: the length of the stem should be fine.  If you want the backrest to extend away from the seat a little more than it does shoved all the way in, you can just drill another hole in the bottom of your seat to accommodate that position. If this is not clear to you, it will be evident to you when you see it.

The angle of the backrest is adjustable.  The stem is pinned through to the back rest with a 1/4-20 ? machine bolt that provides a pivot point.  Adjustment of the angle is done with a set screw accessible from the back of the stem which locks the angle in place.  I've got the 1/4-20 bolt just tight enough so that it holds the back rest firmly in place, the set screw prevents the backrest from folding backwards, and if I push forward on the backrest hard enough, it will fold forward allowing full access to my top box.

Went ahead and bought the ebay one. Crossing my fingers, will report back and will add info to the wikidot under fjowners.wikidot.com/corbin and or /seat.

Thanks!

Kyle,

A note about the set screw. Once the backrest is installed in your seat, and you have the angle you want. Use some BLUE Locktite on the set screw. If you don't, it has a tendency to work it's way loose.
