I have a few questions and need some advice

OK, so I am gearing to do some maintenance items and I have a few question.

First of all, the bike is a 1992 ABS Model.

1. Forks are going to be re-built. What weight oil should I put in the front forks?
2. What is the stock gearing for a 1992? I think my bike has a 17 front sprocket and a 40 rear. Does this sound correct?
3. Aftermarket exhausts by Delkevic, are they worth it, and will I need to re-jet?
4. What are the best tires for the stock rims?
5. Is the ABS model brake master cylinder the same as the non-ABS master cylinder.
5. Where can I get a chin spoiler besides the ones on e bay? Anyone have a nice used one they wish to part with?

Talk about dropping the bomb...

1. Stock forks suck, upgrade to RPM valves
2. 17/40 seems right, depends on what your main riding style is like, I run 18/38
3. If you Delkvic but keep the air box stock you might not need to make changes. Air flow is affected by intake AND exhaust.
4. Can of worms, I ran on Avon tires to get radials. Ditch 16" and go 17" front and rear. Then the fun begins...
5. No idea..
6. Ebay  and fiberglass from over seas... Maybe get lucky like I did and a local had one...

A fine looking bike you have there...Of course I'm biased.  I too have a 1992 ABS model.

1. What the Monkey said.  You really need to get rid of the spongy stock setup.
2. 17/40 is stock for the '92
3. No idea if they are worth it, and yes you will likely need to re-jet
4. Definitely a can of worms.  I'm also on stock wheels as I've kept the ABS function.  I've run Pirelli Sport Demons for sticky situations and Metzeler ME 880 Marathons for well, marathon touring.  Loved them both for each of those purposes.
5. Yes.  Same part, same part number.
6. Good luck to ya!

Nice newbie post by the way...Picture of the bike, year, numbered list of questions.  Wait...are you REALLY a newbie?

Wow, that rear tire looks like it's about a foot off of the floor.  :-)

If you do swap out the exhaust, can I have first dibs on your stock mufflers?  My right one got pretty scratched up in a recent low-side!   :shok:

1. Forks are going to be re-built. What weight oil should I put in the front forks?.....10W and 15W are common weights to use in stock forks. 5W is what the recommendation is with the RPM fork valves.

2. What is the stock gearing for a 1992? I think my bike has a 17 front sprocket and a 40 rear. Does this sound correct?.....17t front and 40t rear is stock

3. Aftermarket exhausts by Delkevic, are they worth it, and will I need to re-jet?..... A few members have the Delkevics, used with the stock airbox should not require re-jetting.

4. What are the best tires for the stock rims? Avon and Pirelli

5. Is the ABS model brake master cylinder the same as the non-ABS master cylinder..... The Brake master cylinder is the same for all FJ models. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/yamaha/YP-36Y-25850-01-00.html

6. Where can I get a chin spoiler besides the ones on e bay? Anyone have a nice used one they wish to part with?.... In great shape, These are as rare as hens teeth. eBay is your best bet. eBay uk, eBay Germany and FJ Owners Club in the UK is also a good source. http://www.fjcatalogue.com/catalog/item/7179686/7361223.htm

Thanks guys, and YES I really am a newbie here... With that said, I have been around for a number of years on Sport-Touring.Net, ADV Rider, FJR Forums, and few others. As I mentioned in my introduction, I have been on two wheels since 1982. Yes, I am getting old.

I do really appreciate the input!

I can answer on the Delkevcs, as I have them.
The stock jetting with a stock air box should do (according to Delkevic) but I also went with UNI pod filters and a carby rebuild by RPM with this information known and Randy jetted accordingly (have to ask him).
The quality, appearance, and sound were everything I was looking for in an exhaust sytem.
At the time I bought mine, they only listed slip-ons for the XJR1300, and that is what I have, but they have since added the FJ1200 to their catalog and also offer a complete system, all SS.

I also have an aftermarket fiberglass scoop on my FJ, which took a lot of work to fit, but in the end, I think is a far superior piece compared to the stock part.
