'89 rear arm on a '85

A have an FJ1100, made in 1985.

Would it be possible for me to fit a 89 FJ1200 rear arm on my existing shock linkage without any modification?
Or are they different?

My swing arm is a bit beaten up, so I was thinking of changing it, found one for sale and thinking of taking a go at it.

I think most years are bolt on. If you get all the bits from the 89 you can have the dog bones to adjust your rear height for when you upgrade to 17".

I already own a 9893 Penske for my current setup, so I can only change the rear arm and not the linkage...

I was thinking that I would polish the '89 arm, then mount the GSXR wheel and take off.

No they are different in regard to the linkage and the linkage is not interchangeable. The 84-88 version use the cast aluminum swingarm linkage with the single pivot pin & shock mount together. The late model 89+ bikes use a linkage that connects to the shock and the swing arm is connect to the linkage via the dog bones.

The current shock set up you have will not work on the late model linkage.

Since you already own the Penske shock, you will have to have it converted over from the early version mounting to the later model if you want to use the late model swing arm & linkage.

Changing the Penske is a simply change of the mower mount.  The old one screws off and the new one screws on.  Check the prices with Traxxion and Penske on a new lower mount if you go this route.

I would have had a 89 swing arm sitting in my garage without being able to use it...

Add that to the pile of things this forum has saved me from doing...! 

I got my hands on another FJ1100 swing arm instead, which I can polish will continue riding!

And thanks for the information regarding the Penske conversion.

The problem is that I'm situated in Sweden, so having to send the shock to the U.S.A. is a pain in the a**, frankly.

Was gonna buy an Öhlins shock to begin with, but I got too attracted to the Penske by too much reading on the forum, causing severe moditis.
