Topic at hand.. bought 91 FJ, with less than 10K, legit, I'm certain..
Clear evidence the bike sat, for years.. But an "Oil Leak"

Search this forum.. its the "Oil on my right boot" one..
Per Randy, RPM, its the "dowel seal"

So bought this crap, rather than to tear it down...  ATP AT-205 ReSeal
(Randy, if you're out there, bought your seals, engine guards & fork brace)

Can just sitting, cause this seal to dry up & fail...
Have 250K on FJ's, never saw this on any, but they were 86's & 89's..

Well, Randy's had more FJ engines apart than anyone and he reckons yes. I've had as many engines (all sorts) apart as him and I say unlikely (from sitting). Generally I have never found those sort of oil galley seals to be a problem until disturbed at which point they should always be replaced anyway.

If it was leaking from there I wouldn't think the oil would end up on your boot, more likely much higher up you leg.
Anyway, if it's leaking in sufficient quantity to land on your boot, the source shouldn't be hard to find.

While genuine low mileage "barn finds" are always exciting, long term stored or under used bikes (and cars) do come with few issues but I wouldn't have thought that seal was one of them.

No doubt other opinions will follow.

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

'86 Ambulance - Bent frame, cracked case, due for an overhaul
'89 Stormy Blue - Suits my Dark Side

Pictures, pictures, pictures...

There are only a few places oil can leak from on the right side of the engine. I will start from the top.

Valve cover gasket & grommets (very common)

Cylinder head dowel seals (very UNcommon)

Base gasket (Very UNcommon)

Crank shaft plug/seal under cover (common)

Clutch cover gasket (very common)

Clutch cover center seal ( more & more common)

O-ring on oil galley plug (common)

If you shoot some pictures maybe it can be narrowed down.

If your oil re-seal in a can works, unfortunately it will be temporary as the seal(s) will again deteriorate worse after is get swollen by the chemicals in that can. If it is a gasket, it will not work.

Thank's to all who replied,
Please forgive my "Forum" ignorance...
Not new to FJ's, but new to the "Forum" thing.

I'm Jim, born, raised in "The Bronx", NYC.  Currently living on Long Island, NY.
55 Years behind me.

Soon as I figure out how to post pics, I will.
My reference to the "Oil on my right boot", was actually to a post on this forum.
Randy diagnosed it as the "dowel seal", Curiously, also a 91, but high mileage example.

Fairly certain, its the same leak, Randy... But troubled as to why it occurred.
Did buy the dowel seals from you some months back... but never did the tear down.

Always afraid of being too long winded on these things..
But promise to help out others if I think I can..

Bikes I've owned:  81 Suzuki GS650E, Honda CB900F, Both gone, regretfully
(the 900F, if for nothing else, how smooth it was)
Think it's Jay Leno that said, "Never Sell Anything", but we all don't have his garage space.
86 FJ, Leftover, bought new 1987, still have, 84 FJ11, "the rat", sold, 2nd 86, (2nd rat, still have)
89 FJ, sold when I bought an 08 FJR, 91 FJ, bought last year, "the oil on my right boot thingy"

FJ, is a better bike (than FJR) IMO
Like the FJR because you spit on it and it looks new again.
The FJ, unfortunately, does not weather well.

Every bike, pressed into service as a "work vehicle",
Self employed, Financial Services, Yesterday, did 100 miles Out to East Quogue..
Have over 300K on bikes, those that know me, know 50K, at least, is lane splitting.
FDR, LIE, Grand Central, Northern State, BQE, "Jackie Robinson", (Formerly, shit, shit, shit, I forget, The Interboro)
Some of the above, extremely narrow, so boxes came off the FJR, straight away.
Quite a few scary accidents, on the mean streets of NYC.
Thinking I'll shock a few.. when I finally figure out how to post pics..

Many, many thanks, to all,

Jim
