What's a bike with no second gear worth?

I was sort of idly musing and checking stuff for sale. Lo and behold, there is an FJ minus second gear.

Google tells me repairing this requires pulling engine and splitting cases, which isn't a small bit of work. A new fork is $40 or so, and it really makes sense to replace all three since you are there, plus whatever it costs to repair/replace damaged gears. I know Randy has the whole transmission in the vicinity of $400.

Also, a used bike, even a running one, is potentially a money pit because you don't know what is in the carbs, and the valve probably never been touched.

So, with all that in mind, what's a fair price for a bike like that? Seems to me it oughta be fairly low...

My 86' has the 2nd gear issue, I short shift (at 6K) cuz its not really bad, I can live with it. Plenty of grunt to get my Kookaloo on considering the issues. I have put more into my FJ than I paid for it and plan to put even more in. If you love what you have then cost is relative to desire... If you love it, then dive in, if not then, count your currency against your joy.... Just look at the many that like HD... Pursue what you love.... Imelda Marcos loved her shoes.... Just my $0.02
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

I agree with Mark.   BUT if you have to have a number, when I spin my wheel of fortune the number comes up at 500.00.... Unknown bike with a major repair problem I wouldn't give anymore than I could salvage it for unless it was something real special... And that price is assuming you are going to do the repair... (and want to).

I have more in my bike than I could sell it for and I don't give a rats, because its mine and I enjoy it. Even if I ever get another bike I would keep the FJ because it makes me happy.... I guess that why I bought it in the first place.

Well, I already have an FJ that runs. This is just musing... Or, maybe not. I think the guy is asking too much, but I might lowball him just for giggles.

+1 Amen!!!
By the way, when fixing the 2nd gear, you will end up, no matter what, with more expenses then anticipated... Ask me how I know... (and it's still isn't finished yet) Is it worth it? Yes!!

Cheers
Whant to check out my photos on the bike??

I agree. I spent way more then I planned and you probably will too.

Plan on replacing the shift drum too. they always wear bad and I wouldn't be surprised if the 1st and 2nd gears need welded and undercut. Its highly recommended to do that to the 84-86 1100s.

Yup, I have it all about covered by now I hope... Just a matter of waiting for the bike to be put back together again  :good2:
I did replace the entire core with one from Randy, easy peasy  :good2:
