TDC marks

Hi all , i recently aquired a 3XW FJ1200 in need of a little attention.

It seems to have been messed with a little and i wanted to check the Cam timing but on the ignition rotor there are 3 marks , the first of which i assume is the ignition timing (F mark) however the T mark seems to be close to 2 other marks . The clymer manual is a little confusing as it only shows a diagram for the early ignition rotors and shows only 1 mark.

Hi Ed,

I have the same model FJ and I have the Clymer manual.  I am about to check/adjust the valves and I am seeing the same thing you are.  From what I can figure from the manual, when you have the timing rotor marks in the 9 o'clock position the top mark is the T or top dead center mark, I have no idea what the other marks correspond to. 

My issue with the confusing Clymer manual is that it states that the cam lobes should be facing away from the shim at TDC, but it looks like that the cam lobes are perpendicular to the valve, with the exhaust cam lobe pointing towards the front of the bike and the intake cam lobe pointing towards the rear of the bike.  The manual also states that the valve clearance must be measured when the cam lobe is facing away from the shim (pointing up as it were).

Can I measure the valve clearance with the cam lobes perpendicular?  I would think so, but if you or anyone has clarification on the valve measurement procedure it would be greatly appreciated.

For as long as I can remember, workshop manuals, while being a great reference for specifications and locating parts (more of an issue on cars) they have ALWAYS made hard work of procedural instructions.
The Clymer manual, like most others, also has a number of straight out errors. All of which have been well documented here.

You have done the right thing, if not sure or the manual is confusing, ask here. There is nothing on your FJ that hasn't been done by members here hundreds of times over and there are experts from every corner of the globe just sitting at their computers, fingers poised over the keyboard waiting to help.

Thanks so much for the access to the manual download!  I think I have a good idea of what I should be doing.  I'll have to start a new thread and stop hijacking the OP's.

I'm a little bummed that the Clymer manual has these fairly significant errors (or omissions).  The Clymer manual that I bought for my KLR650 is lightyears ahead of Kawasaki's manual for that bike.
