At 100kph (62.1mph) there is only 1/5 of a revolution of the front wheel difference between the 16 and 17" wheels with stock 120/80x16" and 120/70x17" tires fitted.
They are, for all practical purposes, the same overall diameter.

Wow, good info Arnie, thanks! However that's still assuming the front gear is the same for both size tires. I think I'm going to call a Yamaha dealer today and check part numbers just for the heck of it.

I got irritated enough to check the numbers myself.  Lots of online parts sellers have the XPDs and numbers, and prices online.
While the prefix is different between an '86 and a '92 speedo gear unit, the part number is the same 25190.

lol. I called Yamaha and they confirmed it's the same gear for many years. Unfortunately I couldn't have been more wrong about the clusters being physically the same. So out comes the Dremel and expoxy!

Is this where I say "I told you so". It doesn't take alot of re-shaping to get it to fit. Even when you get it to fit, there may be a slight gap between the fairing panel and the instrument cluster. Some thin sticky-backed foam strip will seal the gap.    :i_am_so_happy:   Pete.

Ha, I was waiting for that! I will have to make the tach and clock work in my existing cluster. The lens on the one I bought is too cracked to be used (I knew that going into it). My assumption was that I'd just have to modify my lens to accommodate for the set time buttons.

Well I'm happy to say that I was able to successfully swap the clock and tach into my existing housing. I relocated what I'm guessing may be the voltage regulator for the cluster to the outside of the housing, and with the clock epoxied to the tach it fit just fine. There's even a spot already there for the time adjustment piece. While things were apart, I upgraded all of the bulbs to LED's I had already bought. So with everything in place, I decided that it would be too much of a pain to adjust the clock if I didn't drill some holes for the little knobs to stick through. I drilled into the black bezel with no issues, then used the bezel mounted in place to mark where I needed to drill the outside lens. The first hole was perfect, but then as the battery in my drill started to die I over compensated on the second hole, and my worst fear was realized. Yup, I cracked my lens. It's still usable, but I'll want to replace it. Anyone got one for sale? Cheap lol?

Paul, that "voltage regulator" that you moved, is an over rev limiter. It sits behind the fuel gauge assembly on '84 and '85 models. It could possibly be removed completely but don't quote me on that. Maybe somebody else on here can advise you if and how it can be done. If you've already got an alternate mounting position, best leave it be.  Pete.

oldktmdude, thanks for clarifying what it was that I relocated. I'm fine with where it's at so will leave it be.

Anyone have links to replacement LED lights that would be drop in replacements for the instrument cluster??  (I have a 1989 FJ1200)

I can't find an exact link to the ones I bought, but they're identical to these. Please note the red ones are quite tall but shouldn't pose any clearance issues on your gauges like they did on mine. I had to trim about 1/4" off the clear plastic "light guide" that's part of the speedometer. I don't think your gauges have the guides though.
