Hello,

I have spotted this motor come up on ebay a few times, and it is currently posted at $750 which is attractive as mine might be in need of a rebore and this one might be a cheaper option.  Has anyone previously contacted the seller?  Any negative issues people are suspicious of?
Here is a photo to jog some memories:

Yes, I have also been watching that. Done the arithmetic on pick up costs (driving over to get it) and considered offering him $500, but probably won't.

While the FJ engine is reliable and you would have to be unlucky to get a dud, the fact remains you can't see it run and that means you are taking a punt, albeit a small one, which in turn affects the price.

You are staking a lot on the honesty of the seller, who is after all, the seller.

At that mileage you would wonder why the head and barrels are stripped and the entire lower engine painted.

I bought a bike engine couple of years ago with a youtube clip showing it running in the bike only a few weeks earlier and the mileage could be verified from the bike it had obviously been removed from.
What I saw when I got it home was orange water in the inlet ports. A couple of valves had bubbly rust on the stems and one was frozen open. Further investigation found one cylinder also had rusty orange residue from sitting water. The tarp covering it had clearly part blown off when it was raining. I don't believe the seller new this and I was just unlucky.

Having said that. I would buy that motor at a price. $500 has a reasonable ring to it.

I don't know where you are but freight would be a killer.

Hello,

I sent the seller an email asking why he had the engine bead blasted, and then removed from the frame with so little mileage.  I will keep you posted with the reply.  I live in werribee so the trip over to collect would add almost too much value to the bloody thing.

Yeah, that's the problem, a 1500km round trip and a nights accommodation. Now, if I could just fit it on the bike...........
What you need is a very good mate in the transport business.

He has had most of the bike for sale on eBay including the frame, plastics etc and none of it was accident damaged.

G'day,

I received an email back from the seller after the auction finished, the extract is below.

"I purchased the bike with the intent of doing it up. It was dirty, had a rough respray and needed a really good clean - so I pulled it apart. The bike is 24 years old. I then decided it was all too hard and decided to wreck it.

I had cleaned the motor and resprayed it with engine enamel. As for the KLM, I have just said what was on the speedo. I did give it a compression test yesterday and it was pulling 145-150 on each cylinder which is very good. (I did a bench compression test)"

It is still too far for me, if it was closer I could have a look before bidding, and SA is a long way in a car and back, petrol etc would make the engine a very expensive one......
bugger.
