I put a .pdf in the files section....pretty sure this will work.  The mod is pretty easy.  Be interested in what folks think.  Did not get to try it yet....another six inches of snow today.

So finally got out for a ride and brought the bike to work today.  For comparison purposes also rode my son's dead stock 92 FJ.  Not exactly a direct comparison as moditis caught me this winter and mine has '97 Thundercat forks and wheel front and rear with brand new tires.

At any rate ride was firmer (a good thing; I weigh 230) and bike is no ticably taller (I'm 6'3) so all good.

A good option from my perspective.  One learning is that given the angle of the bottom clevis, I probably could have drilled the new holes so the eye to eye length was 1/4 inch shorter.

Some of the later shocks have remote pre-load adjustment as well so may be a good option. :good2:

Hey Jeff,

You wouldn't be able to take the static and rider sag on your setup would you?

aviationfred

I am in the process of installing a 98' BMW1200RS shock on my 89'. I have found out that the upper frame clevis and the lower shock clevis need slightly different shimming to have them fit than the write up for the 91'93' mod.

Yep, makes sense.
Yamaha offset the 91/93's shock to gain room for the optional ABS module. '89/90's shock is centered.

I will try to do them tonight.

I have put about 800 KM on so far.  It is very firm...in fact I may try to back the pre-load off and soften the damping.  Keep in mind I weigh 230.

Yesterday (long-story) my son and I rode it double for 30KM. He weighs 175.  No bottoming out even on some small rough patches.

Fred it looks like on the '89 the mounting point for the lower clevis is narrower than on the '92.  I only used a single washer for spacing on the bottom.

That color of chain is Red Power Ranger approved...

I was waiting for a chain comment.... :sarcastic:,

I buttoned up the linkage today. I didn't use a set of Soupy's links. I made a set of my own. The stock dogbones were way too short. Hole centers on the stock dogbones are close to 4". With the tire resting on the floor the hole centers needed to be 7". Another observation with this mod. If you have a centerstand. You will not be able to keep it installed to ride. The BMW shock is much longer and the centerstand hits where the dogbones connect at the bottom, leaving only an inch or so of clearance between the ground and the feet of the centerstand.
