Fuel pump carbs on a non fuel pump FJ

So this question has come up and the general answer seems to be that it can be done. In fact I am running on borrowed carbs off a FP FJ (Frank, you will get back sooner than I thought). I had to adapt the 10MM fuel line down to 6MM. I have a few rides like this and can report that this set up is limited for me. On my first long test ride, Angels Crest to Wrightwood then slab it back home on the 210, I experienced what I thought might happen. With the fuel level in tank decreasing and producing less fuel delivery pressure the carbs started to starve for fuel. Today I was itching to ride and geared up. Full tank, GPS route programmed in and off I go. After my second to last stop in 45MPH speeds the carbs start to starve (flappers already removed, no tank bag). Pull over (only 115 miles on the tank) and use the starter in short bursts to get the carbs full again. Off again and the road opens up, at 55MPH they start starving, back it down to 45, let the Harley guys pass me as I limp to the filling station. 5 miles later I am topped off and sustaining 80MPH for about 15 of the miles home. I need to rebuild my carbs soon, can't find your Kookaloo with the wrong carbs.

Yea, but look at the brightside...you got that fuckin petcock fixed....so at least you got *some* gas to the carbs...That was frustrating huh?

It's all about progress, not perfection mi amigo.

With what you've been through, all the lessons you've learned, no doubt you will be dialed in for the WCR.

Yes, that was a real SumBitch to figure out, and I am happy to have Frank's carbs to keep me going on my UNI's and SupperTrap pipe. Time to get off my ass and get my carbs rebuilt to get a full tank of Kooklalooo...

Mark,
I've been running a set of FP carbs on my '85 for over a year with no problems.  A few weeks ago I was out with a couple of guys that wanted  to run about 80 mph on the straights (and we have a LOT of LONG straights around here).  I intentionally ran the tank all the way into the FUEL light with no fuel delivery issues at all.

For the fuel inlet, I used one of the 1/2 or 3/4 inlets from a spare set of carbs between the 2/3 carbs on the FP carbs.  Randy offers a straight pipe adapter to replace the 6mm inlet so you can run the 2 inlet setup from your original carbs.  I have one of these adapters from Randy and will install it and a 2 inlet setup next time I have to go into the carbs.  But, it's not a priority since I'm not having any issues.  I left the FP needle seats in the carbs.

I also installed a Colder (company name?) double shut-off quick disconnect in-line and it doesn't appear to be hampering fuel flow either.

It may be that a single 10MM is enough to drain the tank at WOT, the singel 6MM hose is not enough on my bike. I just need to order the parts from Randy and "Get er' done". Quick connect seems like a good way to go. Thanks.
