Air scoop stuff.

What do you call those little plastic clipon pieces that stick to the air ducts on the outside? My bike came missing two, one on each side, and I pulled the others off to prevent their loss as well because they rattle. Mr. Bean gave me a magnet to hold one on that I'm still waiting to apply, but I was wondering if there was supposed to be a rubber grommet to fill the space and get it to fit more snug originally?

Anyways, I can't even begin to search for them because I can't figure out what they're called. Alternatively, if you have some spares for sale, I'm interested.

While I'm at it, my left side air scoop has some damage, and I'd like to replace it. I plan on repainting both at some point, so color doesn't matter, just that it's 86/87 (my understanding is that other years won't be compatible). So if you have that as well, let me know. Otherwise I'll just keep an eye on ebay. Have other monetary priorities at the moment, but I'd try and figure something out if I found a good one.

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.

The Yamaha parts list has them listed as 'Protector 1 and Protector 2'. Here is a link to look at. It shows that Protector 2 (left side) is obsolete. Randy at RPM shows that he carries them. At the moment I believe he is out of stock.

It's been awhile, but I thought I had those off my '93 one time and it "appeared" that they were interchangeable.

If the tab spacing is the same on the top and bottom, the left and right side protectors should be able to interchange by flipping them over.

Here's a couple other tips also.  Get the part number for the protectors off a parts fiche and do a search for that part number on ebay.  Additionally, you could also try http://www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/.  They often have obsolete parts in stock, and if they don't currently have it in stock, it doesn't hurt to check back in a month or so.

Or delete them entirely...

Had to replace the missing scoops on the 89 (after a theft recovery) and always wanted to fill in space where the aggravating plastic trim pieces go.  I scuffed them real well with 80 grit, filled with two layers of dynaglass (a body filler with imbedded fiberglass strands), finished with a thin coat of light weight body filler, prime and paint (Rustoleum High Performance Flat Black of course!).

exactly what i did with my fiberglass 89 fairing, the scoops had the indent moulded in for the protectors, look much better without them
