New Files on CD

Paul, I kind of got the impression from the service manual that the 20W-50 was the preferred weight of oil. The previous owner said he ran 10W-40 through the winter months (he seems to have rode all year round, but he lived in Northern Illinois, BRRRR!), and 20W-50 for the warmer weather. I was tempted to go with the 10W-40 for year-round service, but I decided to follow his example. I think that next time, I will switch down to the lower weight oil. I'm not trying to surpass 50 mpg here, but I figure that the mid 30's was pretty bad for something like this.

Speaking of service manuals, when I bought into this ride, I started to amass a bunch of the service literature. Some I paid for, and some I just "found." I don't want to violate any policies here, but I'd be willing to share these with any members who wish to have them. I'll package them all together on a CD and mail them to anybody who asks. In total, I have:

• Separate parts microfiches for 84-85, 86, 87, 89, 90, 91, 92, 92A, 93
• 1984 Yamaha FJ1100 Factory Service Manual
• Yamaha 1100/1200 Supplementary Factory Service Manual
• 1992 Yamaha Factory Service Supplement for FJ1200 & 1200A
• Factory Owners Manuals for FJ1200E, FJ1200S, and FJ1200SC
• Clymer Manual for Yamaha FJ1200

All of these files are in the Adobe .pdf format. Some of them are indexed well and are easy to run through, some are just high-quality scans of the correct factory literature. So far, I've found them to be incredibly useful, and I will be glad to share with anyone who wants one. Just send me a PM with your address, and I'll see that you get one withing a few days (again, unless this is in violation of any of the groups policies. I do not wish to offend...).

Breaking a policy?  By sharing information?  Hell no!!  I just gave you the ability to post attachments into the "Files Section".  Would you mind posting those files there?  Just create a new topic for each one of those categories you listed.  If you agree...that would be great!!

We are kinda new at this type of forum...let me know if you run into any problems.  I may have to tweak the allowed upload size, etc.  Thanks for your generous offer to the group!  (this may help you to save on postage...)

I would suggest naming them something that wouldn't be easy for a scanning computer to find.  After all, SMF is 'search engine optimized'.

There are bots that ignore the robots.text file, and I think they are the ones hired by the copyright holders.  Clymer is owned by Primedia, a large publicly traded conglomerate.  I think there are companies that say "give us a list of all your copyrighted work and when we find one we'll show it to you for a fee."  I would suggest just making that page only available to those who are logged in.

BTW, I'm of the opinion that these things really don't hurt sales.  Nothing replaces having the real thing there in the garage.  It's just convenience.

Paul, I'm with you; most of the time I like to have the book handy. However, sometimes you work with what is the easiest to acquire. All told, I've spent around $15.00 for all of the electronic files that I have. I also own the Clymer book, just so that I have something to hold on to. Regardless, the .pdf pages print off easy enough. My years in the shop were spent using Mitchell on Demand, which is a very nice bit of software, but sometimes the genuine article would have made the job easier. Diagrams don't always scan or print the very best.

Out of all of the files in there that are worthwhile, I find I use the parts microfiches most of all. With the OE part number, I can find genuine replacements pretty easy online.

Hey, anything I can do to further the cause. I hope that there is something on there that you can use. I use the heck out of the parts microfiches, and the 1992 Supplement. Really good diagnostics for ABS troubleshooting; got me where I needed to be in only four steps.
