Fitted an on/off switch awhile back, just a toggle switch in the neutral line so I can control both high and low beam, one thing that pleasantly  surprised me was when you turn the headlight of using this method the high beam light on the dash comes on telling you the lights are off.

3 wires go to the headlight globe, 1 positive to low beam filament, 1 positive to high beam filament and 1 shared earth wire......I believe this is the wire you fit a switch to.

I got these off ebay

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/H4-HB2-Head-light-Bulbs-Wire-Plug-Heat-Resist-Truck-Van-/370451328777?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item56409eaf09

cut the earth put in a switch. That way I didn't have to cut the harness and could take it out if I didn't like it.

The Haynes manual has wiring diagrams, thats what I used, can't remember which colour the earth was.

BUT if you buy the EXACTLY the same as above, I cut into the black wire.

OR...

If you have a severe case of moditis you could get an early fj  rhs switch block with a headlight switch on it and rewire the harness  :wacko3:

Cheers  :drinks:

Maybe a separate non ignition switch for the hazards and an early fj switchblock for the lights?? :unknown:  :wacko2:

All done, works a treat  :good: really hate boring 12 mm holes in the fairing side panels for the switch but  :ireful: ,it has a crack in it any way, will replace one day!!!!  And yes, the tell tail ie the high beam light is on when the lights are off   I can live with it   :drinks: :drinks:

I thought about using the Pass button to do the Hi/Lo switch using a latching relay. That way I could use the original hi/lo switch as the headlamp on/off switch. I have never used the pass button and often thought it would make a better 'push to talk' button for the radio.

On the bro in laws fj we also did a switch job but rewired the light circuit in 4.0mm wire and used a relay. This made a big difference to the brilliance of the light with maximum voltage available at the globe. Using a relay allows a broader choice of switch as the current is minimal
