Bought an 89 a few weeks ago... thought it only needed fork seals and a run in(idle was so so) ended up
needing new fork tubes because of some strange grinder gouges that were hidden by the dust wipers.  While I was in there I did the rpm fork valve and .85 springs.  Rode through it while the idle jets unclogged themselves-Idle jumped 1000 rpm or so for each of the two that were clogged, haha.  Then I got the uni pods from RPM and Randy helped me with new jets.  Ditched the airbox-love the intake roar, and it runs beautifully. Also have some gold spots on the way-thanks ebay $45 w/stainless hoses, and all the fluids have already been replaced-along with a clutch slave rebuild.  Also built some crash bars, added some HID fog lights, and tusk grip warmers-its a commuter.  Personal stuff-I'm an engineer by school and I break stuff for the navy for work,  for fun I build stuff-vehicles, motorcycles, whatever...

I've got a few questions, and of course, pics...
I'm 5 turns out on the mixtures and could probably go more-started worrying that they'd fall out or shift- how far is too far?  I was thinking I should go from 40's to 42.5 idles, and I'm on 117.5 mains, no shim on the needle.  Would that mean I should go up on the mains or shim as well?  Planning on slotting the ignition for the 4-6 degrees and thinking I might need to up on mains when I do that. Hard to measure 'how it runs' over the web, but the front gets very light in 2nd at 7k rpm or so...

Another engineer type with a manual tube bending tool just sitting in the garage. Not quite enough to make your own engine guards but maybe some custom FJ parts... Welcome to the Kookaloo zone....
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

haha, thanks, I was wondering what the kookaloo thing was all about.... until I cleaned and rejetted.

And those are home built crashbars... thats why the garage is a mess, I had just finished, haha.  I copied the renntecs to a point-the rear of mine are machined down so they actually sit inside the frame.  They're 3/4" .120 wall, just had to take .05" off them so they'd slide in.

Cool!! I was on my way to engineering a set for my 86' till recently when I discovered the challenge of welding them up. I am hoping to find some Rentec's up for sale soon..... Soon.... Soon....   :unknown:

you can tell if it is tuned right if the oil level light comes on in 2nd gear at wot.

5 turns is way up there on the idle mix.  most of us are in the 3 1/2 turns range.

using 40# pilots , and 2.5 turns out on 84 effie <<<< had 42,s but too rich even with needles screwed in under 2 turns
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

Can the blip test lie?  The screws have effect on the motor and it idles glassy smooth so I'm pretty sure its just asking politely for more fuel.  I checked for intake leaks with starter fluid(fire extinguisher handy) and looked for exhaust leaks.  3 turns out on the mixtures required very slow throttle to keep it from not only bogging, but dieing.  I stopped at 5 because I was concerned about the screws not having enough tension to maintain their adjustment, but it was still getting better from 4-5.  Right now there's only slight hesitation if you really grab a fast fistfull-dont think i could do it on the bike. I like to bracket the adjustment though, and I cant adjust far enough to hang on the blip so I'm hoping 42.5's will bring the adjustment in range.

oil light aye, I like it.  I wasnt WFO in second, more like 3/4.  I felt the front start lighten like it was about to lift and was happy enough, I'll have to sit on the tank a bit more and try it again.  It rather suprised me, I wasnt expecting to it to lift that easy-I expect it of my sub 300# street xr600r, but wasnt ready for the fj to do it, haha. Seeing as its raining the next few days I wont be giving it that much twist for a while though- I pretty much pretend the world is an oil slick when I ride in rain.

Here's my previous project, non fj, but still a big piston'd aircooled import...

Almost sounds like the float height is vastly off, but I'd probably do the same that you're doing.

Theremikegoes

I did forget to check float height when I changed jets... hmm.  so on that line of thinking if there's a 'problem' it would be low fuel level/ float level too high?  I would expect it to also starve at higher rpm, which it doesnt appear to.  worth a check though, and I'm kicking myself for not checking float height.

Theremikegoes

well, rightmost carb has a fuel level of dang near 3mm- did the clear line test method.  didnt check the others but if they were drastically different it would run like dog doo.  I'll verify float heights when I swap in the 42.5's... unless someone can come up with anything else that could be goobered...?
